I moved my two indoor/outdoor kitties into Cat Bus (a 2005 Ford shortie) and recent took in a super mellow rescue dog. But they all get restless. If I am in one spot for sometime I let the kitties outside to roam but not to far if I can help it. It's a constant battle with them to keep them in the bus, if I don't let everyone out for a bit they get extremely sad and moody and at times it feels like they try to make me feel shitty for couping them up.

Does anyone leave notes on their bus if they are out and about without the pets? We are concerned about someone calling animal control while the hairy kids are at home and we are out to dinner or somewhere else.

Yes, I've done that, but I'm subtle about it in that it can backfire. Most people don't notice my little dog in the bus, so I don't want to call attention to the fact that he's in there with a big sign.

I have a kennel of about 40 sleddogs - we also board dogs, and provide behavior therapy for dogs that have problem behaviors like aggression, separation anxiety, fear issues, etc, etc - my sleddogs are trained so I can lift my hand in the air to get their intention, then say 'quiet' in a voice not a lot louder than conversational, and all but the young ones that haven't caught on yet, the kennel is instantly quiet - very seldom do the boarders or dogs here for therapy do much unprovoked barking after they have been here for a couple of days - for most of the day, if we aren't getting ready to run teams or take the other dogs out for their exercise, you'd never know there were 70 - 80 dogs here because they aren't barking and I've never resorted to a bark collar - the 'heaviest' I've resorted to is to hold a muzzle while repeating the word 'quiet' until the dog relaxes, then as the dog relaxes, I loosen my hold on it's muzzle - once it is fully relaxed, I give it a few pets and tell it, 'good dog' - it might take 2 or 3 repetitions, and you have to be prepared to get out of bed at 3:am to reinforce the command if the dog is barking and not responding to your command, but once learned, it's good for the life of the dog - show no frustration on your part, ever, just consistency and fairness - stay calm and keep your heart rate low

But you can't take ferrets into California, so if you are planning a nation-wide tour, you have to skip a state.

I had a farm dog that wasn't right in the head. Honestly she was a basket case, her spine and back legs were screwed up from being hit by a car as a puppy. Picked her up from animal control, they weren't even going to put her out for adoption, we just happened to be there when she came in. She could get around well enough and liked to play with there either dogs as best as she was able. She wasn't aggressive or anything but she liked to bark for no reason at night. We ended up putting a bark collar on her before bed, she learned right away what the deal was and after a week or so we didn't even have to turn it on. As nutty as she was, sheet one the collar meant quiet time. She lived to be about 18 years old.

This little girl didn't see any reason to push the cows around on the ranch she was supposed to working, so we figured we'd see if she likes being a traveling dog. We picked her up yesterday. She's skittish as all hell, but sweet and smart. The rancher/vet in training we got her from took her in when she was a year old, she's 2 now. She'd been kept in a kennel outside 24/7 and wasn't socialized at all. They did what they could with her but a working dog that doesn't want to work had to go. Welcome to bus life little dog!

what a loving idea, and obviously your kids are lucky. Pets are always a good option for spending time and playing with. also I would suggest to arrange some game boards for the pets too, so that while necessary the pets will spend their own time.

My Golden loved going on hikes. I didn't have issues with him not being able. He was far more capable than I was.
He was an awesome travel companion. He was very bright, gentle, friendly and well behaved.
I now have adopted a Chihuahua and a Chihuahua / Jack Russel mix. One loves travel and the other is terrified. It really depends on the individual dog.

I've noticed the last couple weeks my oldest cat has taken to sleeping on the spare upside down toilet seat. Since there's no such thing as training a cat, she gets to sleep where ever the heck she wants to. I decided to try and make it a bit more comfortable for her by turning it over and letting her sleep in the recess. She approves.
The 2 boys sleep on each side of my bed, and the baby girl sleeps on the Satellite receiver. You should never have to buy your cat a toy. I have found that a new paper bag or box will keep them entertained far longer than the few minutes they play with a store bought toy.

Buddy loves cats, he thinks they taste like chicken
He had a HORRIBLE fight with TomCat(bigger than him) last week...
The cat ended up in much worse shape, and it was one of the few times I couldn't get him out of kill mode! he went psycho dog!

Had to have one of our cats put down the night before last.
I was asleep when Roxy got home from work around 5:30. She woke me to tell me the cat was limping and looked distressed. I looked at him and he looked scared and miserable. We gave him space and let him be. We went out to our bus and did a few things and when we got home several hours later around 10 the cat hadn't moved a centimeter. He had gotten worse.
We took him to a night time emergency vet and they said he had to be put down. Damnedest thing is he was seemingly healthy and fine the day before. Likely a cardiac thing or infection.
Got home from that at 2 am and didn't get to sleep till 4.
RIP Mittons.

Sorry to hear that. Loosing a part of your family is hard.
I still have sad moments missing my Golden kids. We lost Annie over three years ago. Rhonda five years ago. And fifteen years ago we lost Beau. I still get choked up when I think about them.
On a brighter note
I get to see my adopted kids tonight. I have been traveling for the last week and miss them terribly. That really gives me a kick in the butt to get the bus livable so they can come with me.
I actually considered, for a moment, doing the "emotional support animal" game and taking them on the plane with me. Unfortunately one has a bladder the size of a thimble and the other has travel issues that we are working on.
