If you're local and going anyway can you check it out for me? I have a buddy in JAX but he's a flake and a half. It'll cost me $100 and airfare just to inspect the bus in person.

I am local, and I can, I should say that I am no mechanic, and newbie... the only upside is hubby is a long haul driver and familiar with the feel of things...
She's a beaut by the way, those mirrors- sexy!

For what I what to know you'd also have to be deaf and blind!!
1) Does it start?
2) Is it duct tape or rust that is holding it together?
3) Does it move? (One had air brakes that wouldn't release, audible leak)
4) Did I mention rust?
I don't know anything about them either. Your hubby will be light years ahead of me. As long as it start, runs smooth, and moves I might go to $4k or even higher. I want a 90 pax bus, I think the wheelchair door will be a plus (break up the living rm kitchen kind of thing). Please take as many pics as you can.

Looked at a bus in VA (I'm in MD) and it had the same mirrors. A 37 foot vehicle without a single blind spot. I think it even had a view of the dark side of the moon.
again.

I see very nice $3900.00 buses like that on craigs list. Beware of First Student Busses. That is a contract to school bus service. They wear them out before they sell them.

On internationals, the cluster is OFTEN replaced. Its super common.
Mine says 127k or something but the true mileage is in the 230's.
Virtually EVERY international I see on CL or listed for sale anywhere are presented as though the indicated mileage is correct, when in fact the chances are that its not.

Leaf springs... make sure none of the leaves are broken. Stairs and wheel wells is where most of the rust lives.
East Coast and Caddykid are way more knowledgeable than me.

IDK, I've not messed with anything new enough to "scan".
LOL my 92' is TOTALLY mechanical. Have to shut off the fuel with a big t-handle to turn off the engine! Its so rad, and so simple an engine.
No computers of any sort on mine. That didn't even occur to me.
But in general as a buyer, its wise to consider that many Internationals out there have replaced gauges. If you ask a seller about the mileage, you can throw in something like- "has the gauge cluster ever been replaced? thats super common on these". The lower the mileage looks and the older the bus is, the more I'd insist on verifying the mileage/hours.

Looked at a bus in VA with 26,000 miles on it. Paper label said 94,xxx. So was that 94,xxx broken for 6 months, 3 yrs, etc and the 26,000 was put in at zero?
Called the county it came from and the guy was going to send me a report but haven't heard back from him. Need to call that guy back.

Most likely the gauges were replaced at 94k, then 26k miles were put on the new gauges. I'd GUESS that bus PROBABLY has 120k or so on it.
Look at the gauges and see if they look newer than the bus.

If you can get if for under $3K it would be a real bargain. Under $5K it would be a good price. Over $5K you are getting into the not such a good price range. Over $6.5K and you are into the "you have got to be kidding" price range.

In my opinion, 45 year diesel mechanic, the 466 is not a "better engine" than the cummins. Some had higher rated power, but it really depended on the transmission, because the Cummins can be turned way up. It doesn't matter if has a mechanical fuel pump. or an electronic. These guys can be turned up WAY past what any tranny can handle.

Could you elaborate a little? I've been searching for a 6 window Type C with a 466/643 drivetrain........given the same gear ratio and tire size, and in this specifically-sized shortie, are you saying that a 5.9 could be 'turned up' to out-perform the 466? And how much $$$ would this 'turning up' entail?
Gives me something else to consider.
