breaker box

I wanted to get you guys opinions to see if the breaker box amp needs to exceed your alternator output amp. We have friends with an rv that have a 50 amp circut breaker box. that would seem to me to make it untrue that the breaker box amp needs to be greater than the alternator output amp.
I have a delco remy 22si alternator in our 1990 bluebird schoolbus but all the numbers are missing. Would anyone know the amp output on these alternators?

Re: breaker box

Thanks for the response guys. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding this. I've been reading a book called "Rv Electrical Systems" and on page 62 is has a small section entitled "Circuit Breakers" and is saids " A cuircut breaker of suitable amperage should be installed between the isolator and each battery bank. Suitable amperage is the next size above the alternator output: for example a 150 ampere circuit breaker for a 135 ampere alternator" Are they taking a bout a fuse perhaps or ??????
