I think he's referencing marine salvage... Not electronics salvage.
Like when they piece out a boat, or RV, or auto.
Same as if I went to auto salvage and bought a radiator, I'd guess.
I'd want to see the DOA return warranty before money changed hands

So I snagged this Magnum MM1512A brand new for $430 .... it's a 1500w/2100 surge MSW inverter and 70 amp charger. However I am reading it's not 'approved' for RV use. Can anyone educated on the whole neutral vs ground theory tell me why I can't use it?

Like others have said - it's like buying used parts from a junk yard. Almost any salvage yard you'll buy from will guarantee an item they sell - if they won't don't buy from them.

I'm using a xantrex that came out of a motor home. I just checked it and the neutral and the ground are bonded both incoming and outgoing. your not supposed to bond your ground but the inverter does it for ya so I don't know. that's the only thing I can think of. magnum is a great inverter, nice find

You may be confusing "salvage" with "scrap".
Salvage is generally still useable, albeit with a few scratches, dents, and signs of use. Scrap is (usually non-functional) stuff destined to be recycled, repurposed, etc.

I know I'm resurrecting a dead thread, but I had a question about inverter/chargers. Do I connect the inverter/charger directly to the batteries, or do I need to go through a charge controller like I do for solar? I'm planning on plugging into shore power whenever I get the chance, but just want to make sure I don't overcharge my batteries.

Your inverter/charger will have three sets of connections:
1 - 120VAC input
2 - 120VAC output
3 - Batteries
The connection to the batteries should be fused at or near the batteries.
An additional charge controller will be needed if you add solar. That will connect to the solar panels and to the battery.
