My Champion C46540 is rated 68dB (at 7 meters), so it's not too noisy for a cheapo Chonda-clone. Actually it's a pretty good little generator, and I'm using it during my conversion to power my air compressor, 12" miter / cut-off saw, drill press, bench grinder, angle grinder and 7/8 HP hand-held drill (but not all at the same time!). I have connected a telescoping exhaust pipe to its muffler to divert the exhaust to the far side of the bus, and this makes it slightly quieter. However, a lot of its noise is mechanical clatter, so even a better muffler may not make much difference to its overall noise. Some users make fully-enclosed noise-deadening cabinets for their portable generators, but then they also have to blow in extra cooling air for the engine and generator head.

John
where do you have your generator mounted? and yes those champion generator look like they are a fine one to get, Ill be llisten to one this week. I heard they are very well built,

Geez...as much as i want a nice diesel genset, that sounds AWFULLY tempting.

(And heck, I can always switch later If necessary...)

Re: Thinking of this generator. Opinions?

Hello eveyone, new here but be in off grid re energy for over 24 years. One thing you have to watch out for on some of these china gen sets is they rate them really weird. they use surge voltage on one legg of the 220 outlet which really is screwy. As long as you over buy for your needs you come out fine and where cost is an issue then they are a good buy. !000 hours of use is about what yoou will get if you run directly off the gen set. If you do an inverter/battery setup you can usually ring another 500 hours or so out of them. At the price/size this ones not a bad deal just be aware that it has its limits, we dont want to hear that it left you without ac in the AZ desert in july

Re: Thinking of this generator. Opinions?

canadian tire here has a champion 6500watt ,7800watt peak with electric start, just went on sale today for $799.99 plus tax. they claim 74db for noise.

Im really thinking hard on this one, the only down side is it looks big, making it hard to mount in the bus!!

closed canadian tire is 100kms from me, so not sure when Ill get there.

any comments , on this? suggestions where to install it on the bus?

Re: Thinking of this generator. Opinions?

looked at the champion 6500 w gen, its big, too big, the noise is not to bad, but would be condsidered lound in a camp ground.

bottem line , is the size and weight, Im going to have to rethink this, I saw the hounda eu3000 way to much money , it was half the cost of my bus!!

Iv been reading about the new magna 3300 inverter, got some good reviews, e-start with remote about 1200. and also the boliy inverter (new modle) it to got some good reviews, and some not so good on the early modles. the size and weight as well as the power would make a great slide in, under the bus setup.

has any one use either one? and yes I know the hondas & yams are the way to go, but I just cant do that

I seen that, but its still the matter of the size , weight, I want to build it in the bus with a slide out. Those inverters like the magna 3300 , Ill have to gather more info on them

Just a heads up, picked up a display model champion 6500w electric start genny at Costco this afternoon for $500. They must not be carrying them any more so keep an eye out for the display clearout models.

Re: Thinking of this generator. Opinions?

Bang comes with a buck in my opinion, I would be curious what your going to use your rig to do. Is this a full time home? Is this for tailgating? How often are you going to use the generator? I always prefer quality in my electronics, and generators are no exception. Buy a good one if you'll be depending on this to sustain your lively hood or house needs. Otherwise for occasional use it doesn't matter just keep the gas stocked with "stabil" and use the money it would have cost to buy a good one for another toy or make better improvements.
