Cheap roof air

I'm starting this so as to not muddy up a post about window air units.
Some things to consider when modifying heat and air units.
Remember these are just my observations and thoughts, I am not criticizing anyone. I'm old, humor me.

From a post about mounting a window unit on the roof.

remote would simplify things. I'm thinking out loud here so please chime in.
I think you will find that the remote controls on AC units are infrared, meaning that, unless you move it, the front of the AC unit would need to "see" ie: direct line of sight, the remote control. It can be done, I have done it, I took the control panel off of one of the portable ducted AC units and mounted it into a wall.

Any time you duct air to or from something that wasn't originally designed to be ducted, reasonable care must be taken to not restrict the air flow in any way.

It is harder to get cool air to go up and warm air to go down.

My main objections to roof air units are, they are UGLY, this would be even worse, and that "lump" sticking up into the air stream eats fuel mileage.

Dick

It could be shaped from sheet metal and angled like a roof unit.

I found this video last night, its about split ac in an RV.

Good idea to move this from the other thread. Thanks. I see your point about a larger lump in the wind, but I really don't have many options. I can't fit a window unit in my windows and I really don't want to lose the back glass to mount a window unit.
Maybe a cabinet install with only a door to open when A/C is running. I really don't like the cabinet installs due to the restricted exhaust airflow. Thoughts??

I camt find the post now but I remember seeing a post last year where somebody put a window mount AC unit up over the driver's head. They had a dog nose bus and there was already a little cubby up there. They just cut a hole in the front of the bus and put a vent cover (I think) over the intake of the unit so rain and debris couldn't get at it. They too out two of their yellow flashing lights up front as well and put 2 7" vent covers over the holes to help keep the AC unit cool as well.

I'm thinking I may skip roof ac altogether and do a window unit in one of the back windows next to the rear door, and a 12000 btu split unit in the front.

I put a window unit above the rear door, worked out great.

Not a dog nose and a bit more involved than just cutting a few holes...

(That's Gorilla tape holding the flashing to the metal skin until the glue dries and the screws are put in place, not cut outs in the metal skin)

That's the one lornaschinske! Thanks. I was going off what I could remember from seeing it last year. Sorry if I made it sound too simple.
