Propane vent question

I've got a 5 window short bus and have very few options as to where I could put a propane tank. My plan is to build a propane locker for a 20lb tank mounted inside with a hole in the bottom to vent to the outside. I've found a few examples online of people doing this, but they all used PVC straight down for the vent. In my case, I'd have to go down at an angle and bend around other things before I could get to the outside.

So my questions are:

1) Is there a significant difference in venting underneath the bus vs. venting to the side of the bus (but below the tank)?

2) Do I have to use PVC, or could I use flexible tubing of sufficient diameter (I'd read minimum ID was 3/4")?

It doesn't have to be PVC. Propane is heavier than air so as long as it can drop down and out you should be fine. Maybe cover the outside end of the vent with some screening to keep out bugs and mice.

A good quality propane alarm mounted down low will let you sleep easier.
