Well it all started when my mom and her wife, both in their seventies, finished their Will. They took hubby and I to out to dinner. Where they proceeded to tell us they wanted on the road as soon as comfortably possible. However no money for a brand new rv. Hubby just in conversation said have you ever heard of skoolies. Two days later got a call we want one do you think you can? Hubby is an industrial maintenance man by trade so at least the mechanical, electric, welding, plumbing, hydraulics, and possibly robotic stuff is no problem for him. I worked in my family's wood shop when I was knee high to a grasshopper and in adulthood did a house remodel. So we feel a least comfortable with the tools we will need. Have been haunting this site for a while in silence as we hunt for just the right bus. Just have to say thanks to all the many people so willing to share information.

Wow. That is quite a story. I'm really excited for their (your) big adventure.

It sounds like you all are in good hands and dad's not afraid to turn a wrench.

Tell us about your dream bus and why--also what part of the Nation you are in, as well. You can do it all yourself in silence, or post your ideas to be torn to shreds.

Make sure you have a spot to store and work on your Beastie. No HOA's. Auctions are your best bet, and Bus Season will be here soon !!

We are looking at a gillig phantom with Detroit 50 series engine Allison 5 speed tranny this weekend. Got my fingers crossed that its not absolutely terrible on rust or all the many things that could be wrong. Lucked out on a lot to park it in while we work on it. What in the world is hoaa?

That's not "far left", it's "far selfish".

"far left" would impose on the builders, not the occupiers. They would make sure the house was built properly and you had a decent sized yard. They are building neighborhoods around here with about 10 houses per acre .... in Oklafreakinhoma, where we have nothing but empty space to build on.

No hoas to worry about, renting a 80 foot driveway and building with power to store tools in for 250 score!!!! What do you think about the engine/tranny combo?

The combo is great. The 2-stroke diesels are a bit specialist though, so make sure it's in good condition.

It sounds beautiful.

Take a bunch of pictures and post them up here. Read-up on the engine, does not like to be lugged.

How many miles? What State was it's route? Look for signs of good maintenance --or improper fixes, duct tape, splices, hose clamps with JB Weld...

If you are unsure and want to tie the bus up for a few days, you can buy an option- give the seller $100 to hold it for 3 days or whatever while you decide. write a contract.

I think the OP mentioned it has a Series 50 Detroit.
