Hello from NE Kansas

Hello, I joined the site a long time back but have never posted.

My name is Brent, and I'm in NE Kansas. I'm doing research, watching videos and such right now, trying to get a handle on all the stuff that follows buying a bus. I've done quite a bit of diy carpentry, plumbing, and electrical over the years, so I think I can pull a conversion off.

I'm not sure completely whether I want a larger bus or a short bus type of deal. I really like all conversions, and I think given the CDL requirements in my state that it may push me to a smaller rig. We'll see.

Kansas does not require a CDL for RV's for anything less than 26K lbs. Over that weight requires a non commercial Class A or B endorsement. My full size Genesis weighs 19000lbs. gutted.

If the vehicle is not being used for commercial or farm, nothing more that a standard Kansas class C license is needed regardless of weight as far as the state of Kansas is concerned. I could not find anything in the statute book for non commercial endorsements so I called the local DMV. They didn't know so they called the department of revenue at the capital (Topeka). The lady that answered the phone had to speak to her supervisor and call me back, but that's what she said.

I couldn't believe it, I said, so I could by a d9 cat, semi and lowboy and haul the dozer with a class c and she said yes.

Well Brent, there's a number of us here in Kansas. Welcome to the insanity, er, club... Yeah, the club! Looks like I may be getting a bit of help from my high school class with one of my buses. I'll find out tomorrow.

I have two buses BTW, one just wasn't enough.... It's catchy, so beware.....

Does it tell you on your physical license what you can drive? Mine says, under 26001lbs, motorcycles and ALL RV's. Does yours say the same which would relieve you of the 26k like it does here. My search showed no exemption for Kansas. It's written somewhere

See about page 4 of this guy for CDL requirements. I think it's the best information available currently. The CDL deal has definitely complicated bus shopping a lot. All things equal, I'd rather do a bigger bus, to be able to have all the experiences of the project. I primarily look at Craigslist and Purplewave, but I've contacted a local bus dealer too.

According to the Kansas Depth of Revenue you need a class B CDL for a single vehicle over 26k pounds.

Class A if over 26k and towing over 10k pounds.
