New skoolie in Austin!

Hi, all! I'm usually not one to put myself out there, but I think I might have found my tribe. Just bought a 1997 Chevy 3500 Bluebird short bus and am taking out the seats. I'm overwhelmed and would love any support and help I can get down here!

Welcome!

Great choice. I also have a 350. Mine is a 1991. It's a great reliable engine that you can get parts for anywhere and every mechanic knows how to work on.
There's a lot of reading to do on this site. We all recommend insulating either with spray foam or XPS board after you tear out the ceiling and walls and floor. It's worth the effort and will make a huge difference in the heat where you live.

Where is "down here"? Go to the User CP and fill out your profile so we know where you are and a little about you. It will help get answers that apply to "down here"

Planning on spray foam top and sides and spray foam and/or board on the floor.

seems to be a fair number of skoolies in austin. I would sure like to think, getting some face to face time from other members would not be difficult.

Need help?

Hey, I was hoping to volunteer to help see what it takes for my potential build and also Learn what to do because I plan to do as much work as possible on my own to save myself some money.

Hi all,
Aspiring Skoolie owner here, still putting in my research and also from Austin,TX.
I'm curious if anyone else in this thread has found land or Tiny Home communities open to converted buses? Before I make the purchase, I want to make sure the city is amenable to the bus life. I'm intending to go full time.

Thanks!
Great to meet you all!

I know a few peeps in Boston, though they are more the bus-geek type into vimtage school busses.. im guessing space is an issue up that way for being able to build a conversion?

For a big bus, yeah, I guess so unless you're out in the boonies. I work on my shortie in my mother's suburban driveway and it doesn't seem to be an issue. I'm sure I'm the neighborhood eyesore they all talk about... but I don't hear it, so who cares?

Send the geeks my way! Mine's a '91, that's vintage! I have a guy who was supposed to help me with all sorts of things; we made an admittedly low money deal and he was so gung ho to help me out but now it seems as if he is bailing. I still have a bunch of stuff to do, but some of it (solar panels) I'm probably better off waiting till after the thaw for anyway.

Wondering if any of y'all have trouble finding places to park in the Austin area.
Seems like city ordinances do not allow skoolies. Life is soon taking us (Family of 4)to Austin and would love some info on parking

We live in the Austin area (Taylor, TX) and are in the process of planning our bus conversion. I'd love to meet up with other local folks doing the same thing, and would be happy to help out
