Thinking about a Skoolie - Utah

Hi everyone ... I've been toying with the idea of a Skoolie for a while. I've never actually seen one in person.
Ideally I would like to find people in Utah that have them and hopefully check a few out.
Do we have any such groups? (state or region based)
Just trying to find my way through .....

One thing I can tell you from personal experience and I'm sure Tango would agree--you live in a used school bus mecca. Tango's and my ancient skoolies came from Utah and were in excellent condition even considering their age. Miles driven and hours run are lower in your state than anywhere else I can think of. Add to that the lack of road salt and I can't think of a better place to start looking for a skoolie.

Yes, I am being paid $150,000 by the Utah chamber of commerce, they tell me the check is in the mail.

Oh, before I forget, Welcome and good luck bus hunting! Jack

Welcome, glad you are here. I lived in Utah.
I post on Craigslist to find others interested as well. Made a friend around the corner who is planning to go off gridd too.

Good luck!

Yay for Utah! What part of the state are you located? My Skoolie is mostly done, it's more Function before Form, but works. Some buses here are great for rust, others are terrible. I found mine on KSL. I have friends that have bought them online also..

@ol trunt ... good to know, thanks! I drove on the side for a couple of years for a district out here and they did seem very on the ball with bus maintenance. Our mechanics knew the personality and history of bus. Impressive group. Thanks again.

@Carytowncat ... hadn't thought of craigslist posting for looking for local skoolie folk; interesting idea.

@SDR76 Function before form? Right up my alley. I'm located in the Ogden area, you? I would love to have a look at it some time. I've played with this idea for a while now, but so far I know no one that has one nor have I seen on in person. Friends here in the state that have bought them, or elsewhere?

I'm a little to the south, about 2 hours... Near Nephi. If you are ever down this way, come check things out, take her for a spin, kick the tires ect.

@SDR76 ... when the weather warms if you don't mind, I may just arrange a time to swing down with the ol' motorcycle and give 'er a peak.

I;ll second Ol' Trunt on your area being a good one. And if you can buy directly from a school district...even better. For one you will be paying the "wholesale " price...plus you can often get your hands on the maintenance records. And chatting the technicians will give you an inside line one which are "the good ones".

Happy hunting!

I'm in southern SL County. Mine's very much a bare frame at this point, so there isn't much but hand-waving dreams to be seen.. I keep telling myself this will be the month that I get the shop cleaned up enough to have room to work on it again.

Member slager55 has Layton as his location.

Looking to purchase our bus soon and would love your advice/tips on a skoolie in Utah! Do you have to get a CDL license to drive it? What's about insurance? That seems to be a beast according to most things I'm reading so any tips would be great! And anything in general about getting the bus and getting all the paperwork/logistics would be great. Thanks!

we just purchased exactly what we wanted 112,000 miles 71 pass with disk brakes and mechanical cat engine for 3k we were told by a local school to buy from them as its always cheaper and you can get service info along with manuals we were looking for a year and found a lot but way more than i wanted dont buy the first one you see and watch out for resellers check schools as they usually hit the market in june as thats when they mostly get retired

I'm in SLC… love to meet up and bbq or hike/adventure with other skoolies. I built mine for scuba and surf trips as well as ventures to the woods and desert. Let's find a date that maybe we could all meet up… (?) Mid September is open for me.
