Wishing for a skoolie

Hello. I've been lurking for a few weeks. I'm wishing retirement was here already. I'm in civil service and I have 7 years to go. My plan is to sell our house and travel in a short skoolie with my husband and dog after I retire. Want to live in it full time for about a year before we settle down somewhere. Been looking on here for ideas. When I should buy, from where, and what to buy. Thinking about a 5 window bus with solar and a composting toilet. I think a 4 window is too small and I still want to be able to drive and park it pretty easily. I will need room for all of our outdoors equipment and will be putting a bike rack on the back.

How is something like this?

My job requires me to put in many hours. At the rate I do projects around my house, I'm estimating in will take me two years to fully convert a bus. It would be nice to have it to take on vacations before retirement.

Welcome

Once it is stripped out, you can use it as a metal tent so you can enjoy it while you build it in stages

1) empty it is a metal weather proof tent
2) maybe a couple 5 gallon water cans and a portable sink for veggies and hand washing
3) small gennie for microwave and ac while sleeping?

see how this can work, just priorities first

Welcome Soujan

Did you know it takes most of us a couple years to complete a skoolie build?

I've looked at that bus several times and am thinking that's a good choice. Personally for two people I'd pick a seven window bus. You're planning very well so I'm sure things will work out.

LOL. I still live in a brick and mortar house. Don't need to live in a sheet metal tent yet.

Was reading the thread on insuring the skoolie. I have to say it was pretty discouraging.

Insurance is mostly discouraging because most people don't want to do it the way it works for the rest of us. Independent insurance agents rule. Rules vary from state to state, but there are other NYers that have had success. In fact there have been so many NYers lately that I think you may be starting to compete with FL.
