1984 Chevy P chassis

Hello, I am once again a member of this group (I am currently "across the pond in the sandbox" and lost contact for a while) Anyhow I have a 1981 Chevy P30 Blue Bird "mini-bird" that I am about 50% conversion wise,,,BUT I might have a chance to purchase a 1984 Chevy P30 mini bird with a diesel engine....My 1981 has a gas engine and I am looking at waste vegatable oil for fuel later down the road and the 84 model might be a "good buy" Now to the question: Does anybody know what size and make of the engine that chevy might have used in that year of chassis? I know that might be very hard to answer without looking at it first, but was just wondering if anyone has come across that setup before. I did see the bus before I left and if it is still where I saw it I think I could buy it reasonable, but wanted to ask around about the WVO options first,,,Sorry for being long winded (it gets boreing here) Thank you guys/gals for any help,,,,james....

My guess would be a 6.2. I don't think the 6.5 came out until much later.

I agree probably a 6.2L

I had a 6.2 in my 82 Blazer it ran like a 305 gas engine, slow and steady but got great MPG.

i had a buddy who had that motor (could be the 6.5, but they're really the same motor) in a giant suburban when i was in high school and he got 20 miles per gallon or better quite often. It's a noisy motor, and doesn't make much power, but they are good on fuel. The us military used them for quite a while in chevy 5/4 ton trucks and the Hum-vee's so i assume they are durable.

Is it possible that it has a 4BT Cummins as well? The P-chassis looks a lot like the "doritos" step vans and I know a lot of those have the 4BT, usually the 3.9 liter model, backed by a TH-400.

You could be right. Maybe that's why kids are getting fatter. It's the Doritos.

If it's a 6.2, you need to RUN AWAY FROM THIS ENGINE AS FAST AS YOU CAN! You're better off with a gas V6, or a Yugo with a blown head gasket.

Hey guys, thanks for all the replys,,, I couldnt remember what would have came in the year of GM vehicles and just wanted to see what I might be up against.... I didnt know that about the 3.9 cummins and if that is the case it might not be a bad deal. My luck it is the 6.2 GM but the good thing about it is I know a guy who rebuilds them for the Humvee, so I guess that is a plus, seems I might need to get to know him better,LOL...Anyhow I guess I will find out more when I get home,,,, till then,,,,,thanks,,,James....
