8.3 cummins

I currently have a 89 5.9 cummins and boesch IP which seem to be very reputable for reliability, especially with running veggie oil. I was wondering if the 8.3 cummins shares the same reputation. Do the corresponding generations use the same IP and fuel system components? Anything really about the motor that someone knows. Thanks.

Generally, the Cummins 8.3 is a fabulous engine -- big and strong and durable. The 5.9's Big Brother.

Try asking in the veggie section about veggie compatibility.

Re: 8.3 cummins

Hey Elliot, how's the kenetic racing season? I scored myself a contract to roadrace motorcycles this summer. So I'm looking to upgrade from the 5.9 to the 8.3. Do you know if they use the same ip and lift pump as the 5.9. Are most of the components the same just a larger displacement? If it is I can't see why not to get one. I do a lot of traveling and often if I can cruise at 65+mph instead of the 55mph that I do now, that could equal 3 more hours of sleep before a race. Sometimes maybe the only 3 hours of sleep I get. The fuel system on an '89-'93 5.9 cummins is a powerhouse for running veggie oil I would hope that the 8.3 is as well.

Don't know what to tell you there. Take a look here and see if you see anything of interest: http://www.freewebs.com/nevrenufhp/index.htm

But first of all, you need to establish which style Injection Pump you have, or are talking about. On the Dodge pickups, they used the rotary "VE" pump thru 1993. After that, they went to the inline "P" pump, which is better. But our commercial vehicles got the inline pump earlier -- I just don't know when.

Are you thinking about another bus, or an engine swap?

Motorcycle racing has to be a blast! I just putt around occasionally on my 1983 BMW R100 -- to the post office and such.

The Kinetic season is going to be a humdinger -- I'm a bit worried about time and money for it all.

Re: 8.3 cummins

Cool link on pepping up diesels just by adjusting. I'm looking for a new bus with an mt643 and so far an 8.3 cummins. How are those inline pumps better? Is it the Boesh 7100 your talking about. I currently have the VE. in '94 I believe that they go to that newer pump but I think Bluebird also started going with some electrical stuff regarding the transmission. Sounds expensive to fix. Really I'm just excited to get a new bus and just want to be happy with what I'm getting for the next few years. Racing season starts around april. That doesn't give me much time to find a bus and convert it.

Re: 8.3 cummins

An MT643 is almost worth buying a new bus for! I've never been much of a fan of automatic transmissions in cars and pickups, but I love my 643.

From what I've been observing on this board, you are most likely to find a Cummins 8.3 in a "pusher" bus -- that is, the engine is in the rear. These are also generally the best kind of buses to have -- except that the engine is where you might want to have a big loading ramp. If you can make do with loading your motorcycles and such thru a side door, then you are ready for a pusher.

Yes, the P-7100 is the "famous" inline pump on the 5.9. They are supposedly popular because they are capable of considerable power increase with little effort. Might also be more reliable than the rotary pumps. I do not know what kind of pump an 8.3 would have. And I'm no expert on these things at all!

On my 1992 Blue Bird, I'm not aware of any electrical stuff on the transmission. There is a big honking cable for modulation and/or kickdown. So you may be "safe" at least to 1992.

1994 is when they went to the P-7100 pump on DODGE PICKUPS. Buses got that pump earlier.

If you have been reading on the Dodge Cummins board(s), you have been reading about troublesome lift pumps (which supply fuel to the Injection Pump). If I understand it right, that problem applies to some newer models.

On this board, every once in a while somebody announces they have an 8.3, and we all swoon and drool.

Re: 8.3 cummins

Yeah I really like Bluebirds. Just something about them. I saw an all american with the 8.3 and mt643 with FE. Only one though the rest have been RE. I would have to tow a trailer then for the bikes, side door is too small. If I could find an All-American FE with big drivetrain for $5K I would get it right now!
