Bus Purchase Questions

Got my eye on a 2010 chevy 4500 bus. It has 6.6 Duramax with Allison Tranny (6 speed), 176K miles and the outside from pics looks pretty clean. When I'm able to go look at it, other than a test drive to listen for odd noises what are some things I should really be looking at that get overlooked. I know looking underneath and checking frame and body for things but what else?

Also thoughts on the engine and tranny mix?

Biggest concern with models newer than 2004 is they were converted to a lot of electrical emissions equipment that is problematic, hard and expensive to diagnose and fix.
Where is the bus in question? I ask because there are areas that you don't even want to think about buying a bus from.

From what I was able to find online with the 6.6 LMM is there were not wide spread issues which is my main concern. I can hope that the rare/random issues don't come up.

Upstate NY between Binghamton and Syracuse. I'm guessing you're referring to salt use and the potential rust buckets that get generated?

Any idea why they're selling that bus that is only 8 years old, they normally run them 12 or 15. Yes, salt and rust is a major problem in New England. I myself wouldn't bother searching for buses in that area. When you go look at it walk the floor as much as you can feeling for soft spots. I can almost guarantee no matter what condition the bus is in there's going to be rust on the floor.

It's private owner who has it registered already as a personal van. I didn't ask the question directly but they said they wanted it gone...Ok, walk the floor...would not have thought to pay closer attention to that...Thanks!

$4k. It's has 6 windows with dedicated bus door, working handicap lift and back door as well. Has what looks like AC/Heat unit in the back mounted to the ceiling.

That sounds like an awful good deal for a 2010, I would checked the whole thing over carefully.

There are lots of very good reason why the newer buses are selling cheaper and with very low mileage.

The emissions crap has forced many school districts to dump their buses early due to outrageous maintenance costs.

I live in the fingerlakes region, actually posting from ‘Cuse right now! Rust is a massive concern up here. Look at brake and fuel lines, underbody rust. Bubbling undercoating is a sign of corrosion! Hopefully it’s been well maintained.
