I'm seriously considering direct TV/ satelite internet on my skoolie. This would be especially nice while at burningman.



Anyone have expierence with internet via satelite?



it's 99 bucks a month, includes direct tv for one reciever also.

I'd like to know if any of the mobile Internet satellite systems are actually 'legal' or FCC approved.



I've been trying to decide between Broadband cable and satellite for the last few weeks for the house; we don't have DSL here and the cable campany (Comcast) just ran cable a couple of months ago but isn't ready to offer high-speed Internet; although they say they will in the future (just can't tell me when). I can get satellite right away but concerned about the early reports of terrible service.



One of the things the Internet satellite provider told me was that all 2-way satlellite equipment had to be installed by a certified (qualified) installer due to FCC regulations. Sounds like that would leave out any mobile installation. But, who knows? It sounds like some folks are succeeding.

I have Dish500 in my bus. I just bolted the bracket that comes with it to the roof of my bus. If you already have Dish in your house it's only an extra $5 for another reciever with all the same channels.



To point the dish I have a very long av cable that I plug into a small 4" lcd screen that I take up on the roof with me, it makes finding a signal very easy.



For internet a lot of cell phone packages are coming with free interenet time now. SprintPCS has very fast internet through their cell phones. Just get the USB cable and plug it into your computer. (Of course this works only where there is coverage.)

YES! I agree, if your phone has bluetooth, you can pick up a USB-Bluetooth adapter for your computer for around $10

I hadn't really thought of the cell phone ascpect. I carry a basic Nokia around (that I don't use much) and didn't realize how far they'd come with the USB and cell phone interface thing.



It's a little tricky to try and figure out what to install in the bus now for what might be available in the future; could be years before we're on the road enough to worry about it and by then everything will change anyway!



In the meantime, the cell phone sounds like the best solution.

i'm not sure if i totally understand.....you can have one dish on your house, and a second dish on your bus for only 5 dollars more??



It seemed to me that having a second reciever wouldn't require a 2nd dish.

Took me a while to dig all this stuff up again:



For your first reciever through Dish you pay your regular plan. Then for $5 more you can have a second reciever hooked up. (Not necessarily on the same dish)



So in my setup I have a dish permanantly mounted at the house AND on the bus. And I have a reciever permanatly at both location also. The neat thing is that Dish knows when you use that second reciever so you only pay the extra $5 on months that you have used it.

There is so much competition right now between providers that you will probably be able to get the dish network hardware for free or close to that. There is a promo on their website to that effect right now.
