Crowns the best bus. Any Crown owners here?

Anyone talk Crown?? I am very familar with Crown buses and others.
Shortly, I'm gonna do a hi horsepower repower. I'm gonna fit a BC4 with 425HP into a 1967 Crown. The factory engine was a 290HP and a 5 speed. The replacement Cummins has a Allison 5 speed connected. Anyone do any mechanical changes or repair on a Crown? Check bustropolis.net under crown and the changes and work done on my old Crown... Frank

Hi Frank:

I don't speak Crown yet, but I'm a good listener

I'm still in the learning stage, and a Crown might be of interest. I cannot use a rear engine bus since I need to build a "garage" back there. So it will be a conventional, or a Bluebird FC or a Crown under-floor. Many of the Crowns have stick shift, which is good. But many have a Detroit two-stroke, which is bad (in my personal book). Sooo... please tell me more about retro-fitting a four-stroke into a Crown. Will it require a special pancake engine, or can a regular upright engine be laid on its side?

Next question: I see Crowns at a California dealer listed as "not for sale in California". What would that be about?

Most cordially,

Not a fan of Detroits? You know there's nothing like the sound of a straight piped detroit winding well above 3000 from a stoplight A lot of those detroits (6-71 and 12V92 for example) are actually APPRECIATING in value. Can't help but be impressed by an engine that only displaces 318 ci (6v53) being capable of making in excess of 600 ft lbs of torque. Of course they are expensive, getting hard to find parts for, and leak like no other....

I'm a little interested in this 435 hp repower with a 5 speed allison. Which Allison is it? If it's an MT653, I'd be worried about it holding up. Of course an HT700 series would be fun Ever thought about finding on of the Super 10's from a Crown? I think that'd be cool.....the bus wold be a hotrod

I drive a 3406 Cat at work, cruising 57 MPH at 1300 RPM, so I'm kinda spoiled!

About Super-tens -- we had some at work and a lot of them failed behind the 3406. With "real" ten speeds, we have no problems (except lack of driver skill).

Tonight I suppose I will dream of a Crown with a 3406 sticking up thru the floor!
