Diesel Engine Capacities

I have been searching without any luck for information about the Ford 7.8L diesel engine. I am needing to change the oil and filters on this, but so far have been unable to find any specs or capacities anywhere.

If anybody has specs and capacities for the 7.8 (the 6.6's big brother) I would appreciate it.

Thanks,
B.

I have also found that there is very little information available for the brazilian made ford engines on the net.

You could contact a Ford Commercial Truck dealer by phone, they could help you out.

I have the 6.6 Liter, I"m not sure how different the two engines are. Mine has 2 oil filters, 1 diesel fuel filter, and one engine coolant filter. It costs me just over 100 bucks to replace these filters. I would immigine the two engines use the same oil filters. We can compare numbers, and if you are unable to find them locally, i will ship em to you. There is a shop near my town that has them in stock. I don't want any extra money, just the price of the filters and shipping. The two oil filters are about $12.50 each.

the 6.6 liter holds 22 quarts of oil, the school district that sold my bus to me changed the oil ever 4 thousand miles.

I think parts are usually more expensive from the Ford dealer, but they can get you anything.

another source i use for bus parts is these guys. They're usually cheaper than the Ford dealer, but they don't have everything i need.

Thanks for the info, it's at least a start. I just didn't want to get halfway through it and realize I need to go get more oil or whatever.

The filters that are currently on the engine are Napa branded, so I should be able to get them pretty easily.

I think the 7.8 and 6.6 use the same block, but the 7.8 is a longer stroke. Somebody correct me if I am wrong.

I think i heard the rumor about the two engines using the same block. Might as well buy 6 gallons of oil.....that leaves you two quarts to add after a thousand miles or so.

Thanks for the info. Anybody know or have any suggestions about gear oil for the transmission and differential? I have a 5 speed manual and would like to go ahead and change the fluids in it and the differential.

Sorry for so many questions, I've never worked on a vehicle this big before.

if i have time i'll try to stop by the local bus garage on thursday and ask them what type of oil they use for the diff's. I would immigine it's just regular 80w90 gear oil, but i'm not positive. I'll also ask about the trans. There has to be an old geezer there who remembers the days before all the buses had allison auto's.

I could be wrong but I always hear my gear head friends saying to use synthetic gear oil. It might be worth the investment.

I will probably try the synthetic for the transmission and differential, but at 6 gallons of engine oil, I will probably stick with dino oil to keep the cost down a bit.

6.6 Brazilian

I have the 6.6L and I use Napa Gold filters. The filter number is 1754. 22 quarts is correct.
