"Further" sighting on I-5!

Never again shall I drive a motor vehicle on a public road without a camera in one hand – cocked and ready to shoot from the hip. As it was, all I could do was gawk.

But I think I have found pictures of the bus I saw:

If I am correct, then this is a bus now being used by a college wrestling team – Ken Kesey’s old team.

I don’t know if it could be Kesey’s own “Further 2”, which is known to have existed in good condition, stored indoors, as late as around the year 2000, shortly before Kesey died. I believe this picture is “Further 2”:

Notice that the windshield on the roof is different. The paint also.

I’m guessing the bus I saw today is a replica, built for the wrestling team. Anybody have better information? Not that it really matters, but….

Ken Kesey wrote “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” and other interesting books. And he toured the country with his “Merry Pranksters” in the original “Further” – which is now just a pile of rust and moss.

If you drive thru Capitan, NM on US 380, you will see a shorty with a similar paint job on it. It is parked in front of a business.

No doubt there are a number of copies out there. But how often do you see one -- and a directly-Kesey-related one at that -- barreling down the freeway?

I think I have mentioned that we are planning to paint Millicent at Burning Man this year. (Yes, it will get dust in the paint!) The artists will essentially have carte blanche, but I am going to try to influence them a little.

I'm not exactly sure bc I haven't seen it, but if that bus in Captain, NM is an International k-6 or so, It may have been my old bus which was a '48 or 49 International. I was stationed at Hollaman AFB, NM in '72-'74. I had brought the bus from California and just had the engine rebuilt in Alamogordo, NM. On the first test run, I went east on 70 to Hondo, NM then west on 380 towards Carrizozo. Shortly after tuning onto 380, the engine thru a rod thru the block.

I called an Air Force buddy of mine to bring a tow strap and tow me back to Alamogordo by way of 380 west to 54 south. Somewhere in the hills on 380, I discovered I had no brakes, (engine blown = no vacuum for the brakes). Anyway, the bus flipped on its side on one of the those downhill curves. The wreak totaled my '67 Dodge van which was pulling the bus with the nylon tow strap, and flipped the van at the same time. Being a poor military guy, I didn't have the money for the two tow trucks. At the time I was due to go overseas in about a month, so I gave the tow company the titles on the van and the bus in exchange for the clean up and recovery cost.

Needless to say, I was sick and heart broken, lost my whole motor pool in 10 seconds. The only positive was a local lawyer got my rebuild money refunded to me after pouncing on the re-builder for six months and the good lawyer refused to charge me a dime for his services. The bus was blue with yellow trim on the bottom and around the wheel wells.

Are you going to have nekkid hippie chicks do the painting? Might be worth the trip up to BM.

Hmmmm... no, that's not how it works. That would define you as a spectator, and Burning Man is a No Spectators event.
