Generator vs Battery w/Inverter

Hello. Times are tough and I don't have a lot of money to spend right now, so I am trying to make an educated decision for my Bus/RV "Buscephus". I have considered buying a small generator... 1500w continuous/2000 peak. But now I am leaning more toward a 1000 watt power inverter and a deep cycle battery. Afterall, all I really run is lights and a stereo most of the time. Which is a better value in terms of cost effectiveness/routine maintenance costs? Thanks.

I would think that running a generator just for lights and a stereo would be a bit much. If it's a cheaper generator you'll burn through more gas than you want to. Also if it's a cheaper generator it'll be loud enough to interfere with your stereo and you'll have to turn it up to hear over the generator!

"Lights and a stereo" I would run off a battery and I'd try to avoid the inverter by running 12v lights and an automotive stereo.

But then you gotta consider how you'll charge the battery when it needs it. If you'll be driving every day you might be able to do it with the alternator. Or you may need to plan on being close to shore power. Or you may go for a generator to charge the battery back up.

My setup will be a combination of batteries, inverters, and a generator.

There are other threads on the site that deal with all this. Searching for them will get you lots more information.
