Uh, I kinda hate to say it, but those "crash cages" are standard equipment on buses.

Having had my local IH fellow run the VIN on my bus, apparently it came from the factory without one, but was in the IH records for being recalled and having one retrofitted. It's an '87 model, so somewhere in that timeframe I am guessing they became mandatory.

There was a period of time in which cages were retrofitted and then ultimately fuel tanks were relocated within the frame rails on most models.
