I personally hate building structures from wood, despite making around 40% of my living from doing so.

Wood swells, shrinks, twists, rots, molds if moisture content is above 19%, bugs eat it, ect.

The disadvantages are far far beyond the benefits.

To me wood should be nothing more than a cladding or veneer for visual pleasure.

Soft wood like we have here in Alberta Canada is almost useless. It compounds all the disadvantages.

I would rather build from metal. Hence the reason I'm building a bus, not a sticks and staples RV.

Metal will outlast any wood, and properly engineered is half the weight.

The finishes we have for metal today can last a lifetime, and never require a refinish.

Wood must be refinished continuously. Life is too short for that

However, I also will not install asphalt shingles of any kind due to them not lasting the life of the building. I install only metal cladding on roofs.( Roofing tin, metal shingles, ect.) Once installed correctly, the metal lasts a lifetime.

So, yes I like the look of wood, but nothing else about it.

Speaking of Steve, is he totally erased from the site? There were a ton of pictures of his bus and he used to post every day. Just did some searching and can't find anything about him.

Oh come on Nat....can't you just give out one damn compliment without having to add a sermon about the evils of the damn wood.

I think those pictures show what a good carpenter can achieve in a bus and I for one appreciate getting to see what I can accomplish if I should choose to.

My buddy does killer airbrushing out of his studio- a 1966 Ford school bus that was lovingly converted by a skilled carpenter back in the 70's. The wood is holding up REALLY WELL in this Florida humidity.

As a Carpenter, IMO that bus represents what a Entry level Carpenter can do.

Those are small, thin pieces of wood. Not much skill required to build something like that.

If you make a mistake, toss the small piece and start over. Not much lost.

Start cutting 4x8 sheets of nice wood and making it fit around everything with angled compound miter cuts at ever corner. Then you can say the builder was a good Carpenter.

This is why tongue and groove 1x4's and 1x6's are so popular here. It's easy to install for a entry level DIY'er, with basic tools, and little skill.

I didn't post that for those of you who have read my previous posts. I post stuff like that for the new members that need to know the down sides of using wood.
