Help! electrical mess!

Hey new to the skoolie thing and bought my first bus. Its a 1980 Thomas bus. I was wondering if anyone has a wiring diagram I'd really appreciate it. The problem is my turn signals dont work when I throw her in anything other than neutral.

Please tell anything that happens. Turn signals are easy

Turn signals and transmissions are not connected in any way. Most turn signal failures are the flasher goes bad. Tell all for a solution.. Frank

Whenever lights do weird stuff like this the first thing I look for is a failed ground connection. You could start at one or more of the lamp sockets and measure resistance from the socket shell to battery ground, a clean bare spot on the frame/chassis, etc. Could also try testing it at night -- often when it's a bad ground, you'll find the lamps actually do light, but very dimly, and other lamps do too (indicating that the current is going through those lamps instead of directly to ground).

As far as the relation to the transmission selector -- maybe the neutral safety switch is involved somehow? Short of that I'm with frank-id; interaction between the transmission and turn signals would seem unusual at best.

Which model of a Thomas bus do you have with which chassis?

Some of the Ford chassis buses had column mounted gear shift levers.

If you do have a Ford with a column shift you may find your turn signal issue has something to do with the harness in the steering column.

If you don't have a Ford chassis with a column shift I have no idea as to what might be the problem unless it is a ground related issue.

Its Chevy Thomas and I could not believe it myself never had a issue ever that taking her out of neutral would turn off my blinkers. Hazards still work..? It has a shift kit that the previous owner installed as well as trailer lights with trailer brake kit that is tied into the mess. It's like rainbow spaghetti down there. Thanks for all the help but decided to buy a turn signal kit for 56 bucks on ebay. And save me a lot of headache!

We don't need no stinking blinkers.
