VIN would help determine what it is. Did the listing say "T2(NOT TC2000)"?
I think it is an uninformed seller.
Stats show that engine was not available as an option after 98, nor was the 3060, 643 was the exclusive trans in the RE in 99.

Pros: Big engine, good transmission type, likely can cruise and climb well, not loaded with emissions controls like 2004+. So far, so good.
Potential Cons: Need to look at tires (check date codes) and climb around looking for rust. How far away from you, where is the bus (as in, "rust state" or not), and what do they want for it?
Others will add better advice, but this might help get you started.

Unless you have really deep pockets or just like throwing money away, run from that bus. Do some more research here and you'll find that any bus before 2004 regardless of trans or engine can be had for less than $4k. There is nothing on that $12k bus that you wouldn't get from the same auction the guy trying to sell it to you paid $3k for it.

www.govdeals.com is how many here get their buses. They currently have a dozen in Georgia, though many have either Cat engines (expensive when they need repair) or T444s (not as much power).
Use Gates VIN decoder to see what engine a bus has (click on the 'details' link and it will also tell you if the bus has air brakes).

Thanks for the response but my real question is how much better, if any is the saf t liner than the bluebird Tc2000?
I am a long time out from pulling the trigger,. The search windows disappear when I start typing with my phone so I'm trying to ask questions to learn. I've read comments the thomas saf-t-liner is the best. Is it?

If you're in the market for a 5.9 + at545 the TC2000 is a great bus and they're cheap.
I don't think you' call the Thomas bus the "best" because they're all different and have their positives and negatives. Gotta know what you're looking to get out of a bus before anyone can suggest what the right bus might be.

I've read the caps fuel system is nothing but trouble and likely to dilute the oil.
Is it really that bad?

They are similar buses. Most often with the 5.9/545 combo, limiting it's performance. Once in a while you can get one with a bigger motor/tranny combo. For conversion, the Thomas is preferred for it being held together inside with screws instead of BlueBirds rivets. Other than that a Thomas MPV-EF and a BlueBird All American A3FE are essentially the same bus. Engine/ tranny combos are the deal breaker.

I have an 95... 98 maybe (old age kicking in) F700 with an 8.3 and I'd rather stay the same so spares will interchange.

can the MT643 be swapped to md3060 with a stand alone controller?

Bluebird 1998 model with a build date of 6/18/1999.
What does the length code "length-3904" mean on the build sheet?
Also "W/S-STYLE = 4FF"?
