The eagle didn't make it...
Injured bald eagle freed from storm drain dies

But hey we will have more highways and starbucks, so no worries.
They just got the go ahead to clear even more miles of animal sanctuary and are scoping out property to buy. The real estate developers are having the time of their lives, and people are hunting down the last of the remaining wildlife real quickly. Someone shot a black bear just for fun a couple weeks ago.

Brings back memories of the restaurant in LA that was busted for specializing in endangered species meals for the rich and famous.

Back in the '90's a woman in Alaska killed a grizzly with one shot from a .22 derringer.

I would say that shot placement can trump caliber some times...

My personal preference would be to stay far enough away from the bear that I would need a bigger gun. The bear had her left arm in his mouth when she stuck the derringer in his eye and pulled the trigger.

My first choice would be to avoid the circumstance that would require me to shoot the bear. Second choice would be a .300 winmag or similar.

Several years ago my uncle killed a large brown bear with a .243 winchester. He shot it seven times....

Last month I was riding my side by side in southern WV when a bear came running up the mountain , stopped on the trail in front of me and kept going up the mountain. Scared the crap out of me. All the people I ride with carry fire arms. Makes me think I should too.

What i was asking was , has anyone had problems with wildlife while boondocking, my GF seems to think its a common occurrence for bears to raid a campsite.

In general: No.

In some areas it can be. Generally in those areas you will find signs/regulations regarding handling and storage of food and garbage.

Check the website for the area you are looking at camping (National Park/Forest etc) and if there are bear issues you will find information there.

I have been spending time in the woods for almost 50 years and have never had a really scary bear encounter. I have never had one enter my campsite.

I live in the woods and find bear tracks in my yard on occasion. In the 6 years that I have owned this property I have never seen a bear. I know that they are around but they are quite shy.

Brown and black bears are usually as afraid of you as you are of them. Grizzly's are a different story.

Exceptions being if you corner them or there are cubs involved.

The reality of it is, the two legged predators are the biggest threat.
