Long hair and breards. Required?

After a couple years of lurking and some direct participation, I've noticed a certain common element when examining photos of Skoolies and their builder/owners: long hair and beards.

This common element can also be found in some of the conversation that goes on around here.

From another thread picked at random:

Friend ... do you have long hair and a beard? Are you still wearing 1970's vintage tie-dye? Do you have more than a passing interest in the music of Three-Fingered Jerry and The Boys?

Are you considered "weird" by folks who wear Izod shirts, plaid shorts, long-white tube socks and sandals?

Before you answer, take time and consider your reply. Here's a musical interlude that might help you make up your mind:

As for me, consider photo #7: https://www.buzzfeed.com/bennyjohnso...8do#.xkpR62dvE

At least they didn't call me Old and in the Way.

PEACE

My long hair vanished in mid-95 and oddly enough I'm wearing Izod shorts I got at Ross for ten bucks. I have really pronounced tan lines on my feet from wearing birkenstocks since about 1993.
I've have noticed lots of beards but most of the users on this site are definitely NOT hippies. Bansil is definitely a total hippie though!

Since 1950.

The only time I've cut the hair or the beard were the 2 times I was in the Military, Army AND Navy.

There was that time back in 1974 that I got caught wearing a wig and got busted back to Spec 4 ... but I got my stripes back before I got out.

I have had 1/4 or shorter buzz cut since 1989, and tankerstash/Pornstash or Earnhardtstash normally a goatee of some kind

Now the Hippy part? well I would say it's more like a nudist thing, meets Appalachian thing .meets redneck thing...I am well rounded

I guess I could run a line about having a Schnauzer when a young lad ... but I won't.

I always wanted one of them or a handlebar, but even with wax I couldn't keep the ends up.

Well, I have dreads and a dreaded beard, but am by no means a "hippy." I hate getting hair cuts and combing... and this is just what happened... I also like how my appearance freaks out the yuppies. So much so that alot of them wont even speak to me... Sadly I get mistaken for a hipster sometimes but after one sentence comes out of my mouth most people realize I am not one of those either. Give me my 3 feet my guns and my motorcycle, keep your religion away from me and all will all be just fine... So I got that going for me... Which is nice... 'Murka

Any mullet wearers?

Mullet w/ ponytail, beard and alternative footwear?

Pony tail...check. Goatee/stash...check. 77 vintage Hawaiian shirts...check.

"Men of a certain age grow ponytails and wear Hawaiian shirts in an effort to forestall the effects of early onset dignity."

(Wish I knew who to credit for this one)

Within a year I'll drop a beard from 1/4" to a couple inches then back again. All depends how busy I get with other things really! Now for long hair? Well, my scalp won't cooperate.

I do, however, go barefoot for at least 25% of the year, though that may be more of a qualification as a Hobbit than a hippy... Wearing boots right now because I'm cleaning up the bus's leaf Springs on a couple saw horses and - would you believe it - those things are damn heavy! My toes are no match for that angry metal..
