My vote is that what you're cracking off is actually the lead base of the battery. At the very least you greatly increase your risk of shorting the battery out internally. AGM's do so well, among other things, because they are insulated against vibration. I know I won't be dropping my batteries intentionally any time soon. I think they get shaken up plenty just driving along as is.
