Re: Music!

Crazycal, War Pigs by Black Sabbath is one of the greatest songs ever IMHO! The guitar solo on that tune is one of my favorites of all time! Of course Tommy Iommi is playing a Gibson SG, which is a close cousin to the Les Paul.

Re: Music!

Some of the members probably think I just landed from Mars after seeing some of those videos. I'll wake you guys up!

So Dan, you like the geetar, here some more stuff for you.

http://youtu.be/uOcUgJ98u28

Kenny doesn't sing worth a crap but plays geetar pretty good for a 20 Y.O. At least to the untrained ear like mine.

Hey Mister, how about some cow bells to go with those drums.

I do like that electric guitar sound. I am a fan of Joe Satriani.

However, There are other ways to kick butt. Check out these videos.

Re: Music!

Crazycal, I saw Kenny Wayne Sheppard once a few years ago. Of course, he is best known for this tune: .
He's an excellent guitar player for sure.

Rudy, I love that accordion jam! Mixing it up with a bit of Cajun and a bit of improvisational jammin'... just awesome!
Laissez les bons temps rouler! .

And yes indeed Rudy, you got your Fahey/Kottke on there for sure! I've never played around with alternate tunings, but think I would really enjoy it once I got the hang of it.

Re: Music!

Dan, you certainly will enjoy open tunings on the guitar.

For all guitarists in our bus family, I will tell you of three of them.

The easiest is Dropped D. Just lower your 6th string (the big one) to D instead of E.

Normally the strings are tuned E B G D A E (from the skinny string to the fat string). (1st to 6th)

Open G tuning is fun. Detune your 1st, 5th, and 6th strings so that you then have D B G D G D.

I also loved Open C tuning. That is the tuning that I used on the video that I posted. I need to tell you that I also tuned my guitars four frets lower than normal.

So, Open C tuning is E C G C G C. In regular pitched guitar strings, you see that you will have to tune the B string up to C. The other ones all get tuned down.

Playing slide guitar in open tuning is very rewarding.

I have to thank Leo Kottke for this knowledge. I wore out many of his vinyl records learning how to play that way. I had a record player which would also play 16 speed. That effectively slowed down to nearly half the speed of 33 rpm.

That was way before digital devices. Nowadays, there are devices with which you can slow down the speed and yet remain the same pitch.

Duane Allman, Lowell George, Leo Kottke, John Fahey were great slide guitar players. I say "were" because the only one that is still living is Leo Kottke.

Bonnie Raitt learned how to play slide guitar from Lowell George. He was the founder of the band Little Feat.

I always put the slide on my little finger so that I could use the other three fingers to fret.

For those that do not know, Rudy Harley is known as Accordion on this site.

I highly suggest that everyone should try the accordion at least once. You may just fall in love with it. I know that accordions are kind of dorky, and not as cool as guitar, BUT it is like playing two guitars at once.

Playing musical instruments is good for your mental health. Scientists have discovered that the human brain is operating at it's fullest potential when a person is improvising music.

SO! If you don't play an instrument, START doing it. It will keep you young. REALLY!

Re: Music!

Rudy, when I heard your accordion playing, I wanted to dance with a nice blond that had beer breasts and have a few pitchers of good brew.

As far as playing an instrument, forget about it. I'm pretty sure I'm tone deaf.

I think I've seen KWS twice. He opened for BB King. I don't remember the other time. The ex whiff would have dumped in a NY nanosecond for Kenny Wayne Sheppard.

Re: Music!

And from Cajun we move on to Celtic (rock, that is):

Is that a Les Paul Jr. he's playing?
