newbie question

so i have been noticing that i see weight plaques that say certain weight on front and then back axels

and then the gvwr is like 28,000 lbs

my question is the gvwr total weight with all contents and weight that it can carry or how does that work

Gvwr is the max weight allowed. So in your example 28k lbs, you shouldn't exceed that. That includes everything from fuel, water, stuff inside the bus, passengers etc. The total weight.

Also you have to be careful not to exceed the weight rating of the axles. You could be under 28k lbs (less than gvwr) but if you had all the weight on the back axle, say 23000lbs you could be exceeding that weight limit of that axle.

Thank you so how would I go about finding what are the limits,

Also so the bus can actually be less weight then the gvwr but that's just saying the totals ?

The axle limits should be on the data plate, mines above the drivers head.

Correct, for example the bus could weigh 18000 empty, which would give you 10000lbs to add to the bus. Unless you're loading a significant amount of stuff in the bus you'll probably be under the gvwr. I believe a lot of people are quite a bit under after removing seats etc and adding in their pieces for the conversion.

My bus was around 24000 empty and has a gvwr of 36500.

Towing would fall under gcwr, gross combined weight rating. Gcwr is usually higher than gvwr since the towing vehicle isn't supporting all the weight of the trailer, just tounge weight, going and stopping.

I have yet to hear of a school bus having a gcwr since they weren't really designed to tow. Maybe someone can correct me on that. I did tow a 6000lb trailer with mine which put me at around 38000lbs and it seemed​ fine.

So ib was thinking of towing a 18ft concession food trailer also...weight is about 6500 . what's your thoughts

So long as the bus isn't super heavy, loaded to the max, and you have trailer brakes I wouldn't see it being a problem. If you don't have a bus yet I would definitely look into one with a heavier duty transmission to help deal with the added weight.

Do you know what Allison transmission it has? I have the mt643. From reading the forums I think the md3060 is desirable.

Just wanted to add that regardless of how high the weight rating is for a given axle, you cannot legally exceed 20,000 lbs on a single axle.
