No leaks in my roof hatches. Should I take them out anyway?

Hey all. My 2000 Amtran Genesis roof hatches seem to seal like a champ. I am reading a lot about people welding steal plates over them and sealing them in. From your long term experience, is this necessary? Looking at you veteran bus road warriors.

It's not all that common for people to completely delete roof hatches.

What is common is that they get repurposed for AC or fans. The standard hole opening for RV units is 14" square, so the hatch holes are too big.

The normal solution is to skin the hole with steel. It's not usually welded in place but sealed with an elastomeric sealant and either screws or rivets, then a new hole is cut.

None of this is necessary. You are free to keep your hatches. Be aware though, that the roof hatches are a very common entry-point for thieves.

You can deal with the "thief" thing by fashioning a grill, or bars that can be fitted when you leave the bus unattended. It won't stop them breaking the hatch, but should keep them out ... especially the kids.

I have been looking at some of the boat hatches. I believe some are hurricane glass. Still work as an exit also. And the other exit getting a big power sunroof. Kinda nice having fans in both the E exits,not so much now but when gets hot will be nice.
