I see those online from various companies but think they might have balance issues if rocks ice etc. get in those cavities.

Funny thing is...you could buy tires almost exactly like those here in the US...in the 1920"s!

Not really. Back when I was a fulltime Guardsman, and in charge of 20-odd humvees (as an E-4), we were looking at something similar for our vehicles. Tires like this are actually self-clearing, something that the MTs and MTRs on the Humvees aren't.
