How about using a Bomar hatch. They are generally have a smoked plexiglass opening hatch. They come in all sorts of sizes.

Great pictures. I am in the process of doing this myself. One question, to lay the sheet metal over the hole I see you lined it up close to the second row of rivets. What did you do with the row that your covering? Did you grind those out so the panel would sit flush? Thanks for the help.

on that particular bus I ground the first row down a bit so it would sit a bit more flush then riveted it between the two factory rows.
I'll be doing my Thomas roof hatch, strobe, and passive vent delete in the next week or two and will update with some pics.
