Salute To Veterans 2015

Its Veterans Day in the good ole USA, and Remembrance Day for our neighbors to the north.

I woke up in the wee hours of the morning thinking of my Grandad who passed away several years ago. I had to idea Veterans Day was even here (I'm very forgetful of dates in general). Something woke me up, though, and all I could think about was my Grandad and how he had been so proud of his service as an Officer in the Navy. It must have been 3am and I was up looking at old pictures of his ship. Even found a video of it being sunk after it was retired. I could always tell from the way he talked about it that his service aboard the submarine tender ship USS Bushnell had been something he was immensely proud of.

X3. Most of the Veterans I know are in my ham club. Many are from the Korean War era but we even have one guy from WW2. He is in his nineties. I brought a metal and wood object dated late '45 to show one guy in the club that was in the Army during the Korean War. You should have seen him holding it. You would have thought he was holding the first woman that popped his cherry.

Roughly 1,264,000 American soldiers have died in the nation's wars, defending what their hearts believed

~620,000 in the Civil War (23,000 in 1 day of fighting at the Battle of Antietam in 1862) the emotions ran deep during my visit there

and 644,000 in all other conflicts since the civil war defending our home land and our beliefs

It was only as recently as the Vietnam War that the amount of American deaths in foreign wars eclipsed the number who died in the Civil War

Here's to all that have served their Country in Military and Civilian capacities; Thank you and I will see my friends at Fiddlers Green

Thank you everyone who fought for a good cause. Grandpa is a WW2 veteran and lost his brother in the war. His nephew was born after his father died, I don't want to imagine what nightmares veterans have had to suffer.

Keep in mind "Veterans Day" is the celebration of those serving and survivors of military service; while "Memorial day" is a day of remembrance for those who've served that are no longer with us. I celebrated by going to my local Air Force Officer's Club and playing the challenge coin game with the youngsters.

Roger that. I was teaching some classes in Tennessee this year and missed my hometown Veteran's Day parade for the first time in years. But all was good. In my class of about 15 there were three Vets including a 29 year Army lifer.

We had to to make the same point there among the civies. Memorial Day is just for those who gave it all. Many of the younger set see that holiday as only having something to do with "50% Off Sales".

Duly noted on the difference. But Looking over the thread, I don't see where anyone said anything that confused the two holidays.
I mean, I spoke of my Grandad, but thats the Vet I'm most closely related to.
