Thoughts on a 2005 International DT466

I've read some forums that say a 2005 International is one to steer away from (the comments were related to a VT365). Well, I'm ready to buy my bus, but very leery about making a bad purchase.

Should I stay away from all 2005 Internationals?

I welcome your comments on this bus:
2005 International CE300, DT466, with 2000 Allison transmission.

Here's the link to the bus (auction $800)

The biggest concern you will hear about is the fact that after 04 they started implementing a bunch EGR and Emission equipment which is poone to have issues that are hard to diagnose and expensive to repair. For those reason we generally stay 04 and before. The reason you see newer buses out there before their time is because the school started having issues and dumped it.

Date of manufacture is 5/04. Could possibly be pre emission?

Found the engine tag. 2004 with EGR.

I see where you found the '04, but where do you see the EGR?

Kathy, if you look for the blue engine tag that says 2004, then look middle right for small print line of letter codes including EGR

I've been warned to avoid these. Warned by the service manager for the local Navistar fleet center.

Just curious (on account of my bus being named "Rusty" for reasons), I have the 2003 version of this bus. How much would a truck mechanic charge to take the pre-EGR DT466 out of my current bus and put it into the 2005? My engine had an in-frame rebuild at 120K and is currently at 150K and my mechanic said it's in great shape, so it might presumably be worth plopping into a bus that's in better shape body-wise.

Anything can be done if the right amount of $$ is thrown at it. If you handled the labor it might be financially feasible however if you have to pay for that kind of job, it might not be worthwhile???

Having said all of that, you're likely going to have to harvest your transmission and all underhood wiring to make such a transplant work.
There is currently no emissions check on 1 ton and up vehicles in NH, but don't know about any other state...

Now back to regularly scheduled thread topic...

Possible Bus for Me

I may have finally found the mid-size bus I've been looking for - but I'd really appreciate your comments and advice.

This is the bus: 1992 Navistar International DTA 360 diesel engine 5.9L in line 6 cyl. 5 speed manual transmission. 55,400 miles. Body model: Carpenter SB-2508. Wheelbase 218, 59 passenger, 30' long. They're asking $2,650

From reading lots of other threads, it looks like the 360 diesel is a workhorse engine, but not that great at speed - which isn't important to me. Given the mileage, I confirmed that the engine was replaced, but how do you know the mileage is for the installed engine?

I'm super excited to find a manual transmission - is there anything I should be aware of - or watch out for?

I know that Carpenter bodies are known to have the roof collapse if there is a rollover, but to be honest, I think a rollover would pretty much total the bus anyway.

The undercarriage looks pretty good - and I'm having a diesel mechanic inspect the engine.
- Is there anything else I should be looking at / for?
- The price seems about right to me - is it?

I trust and welcome your wisdom (and snidely comments), so PLEASE I'd appreciate your input before I pull the trigger and buy this bus!

Thanks & Cheers, Kathy
p.s. I've tried to add photos, but can't get them to show - what am I doing wrong?

I work on a fleet of trucks with the 05-07 DT466 EGR equipped engines and really haven't had too many issues with them except electrical problems.

Why is the title about DT466 when they have a 92 DT360? Nothing related to a DT466?

The Carpenter bus roof collapse problem was only for a limited year range. Unfortunately the range is 1986 to 1995.

Thanks Musigenesis. I believe it was related to only rollovers.

I want to add solar panels and a small deck (anchored to the roof ribs) to the roof. Do you think that might compromise the roof?
