Re: "We are 100% of the way there"BASE BUS PRICE has been me

Good heavens! That's a pile of rust!

If you ever wander down to Franklin, NC (if you want to go that far) before you have a bus bought, let me know and I will give you directions to a place that might have some for sale. They quite often have a few with prices on them. When we left (2009) they had three for sale with $2000 written on them. They seem to like $2000 price as most that we have seen sitting there for sale had that price on it. I think you need to go during the week. I think they are part of the school bus repair shop. Not really sure as the Macon County "school bus barn" is a tad spread out.

Re: "We are 100% of the way there"BASE BUS PRICE has been me

Thanks Lorna

And Stuff the mechanicals are secondary to a point...I hate body work...I prefer to leave it dented or cut it off so it can't dent any more...rust tho...blagh..

As long as body and frame is clean the rest can be fixed, I def. will not buy a rust bucket.

I can deal with rusted out stairs(since they will be removed) and battery boxes etc; easy fix's....body rust nope,nada...no way

So any idea on the front red brake tags?

ive tried googling that red tag but air brake + tag = commercial vehicle apparently lol. nothing about tags on the brakes or out of service or anything.. kinda boggling.

Re: "We are 100% of the way there"BASE BUS PRICE has been me

checked out a 97 last night,
Carpenter flat nose,5.9,545 and airbrakes.
When I got there the mechanics where taking the camera equipment out(monitors kids) and taking some of the vynal letters off, just went off line last friday due to build date coming up that would make it 16 years ; in TN it is 15 "complete" years, they got every date they could out of it

I was the first to see it,since we have been looking for about 6months now.

and have looked at several over the winter from these guys and they knew we where just waiting on money so he has called us several times so far

The seller remembered us and called me!

Bus looks good only real rust issue is at the stair area, which is no problem since it will get cut out.

Air build up was quick and motor and tranny "looked" good, used fluid (not burnt) and coolant looked and smelled good.
Next step

Test drive on Friday at lunch....we shall see...

Err...might wanna rethink that one. The AT545 is not a good choice for a highway runner. It never locks up, resulting in high RPM's, wasted fuel, and an incredible racket from the wound-out engine. It's OK in a gasser or an International T444E (which is a revver), but not great behind the 12-valve Cummins (which is a low-RPM stump-puller).

well, one could drive the 545 until it has a problem and then buy a 643....there is tons of them out there for the same price as a 545.

Re: "We are 100% of the way there"BASE BUS PRICE has been me

Exactly right, drive it until I want to upgrade auto or ?
Well right now hiway is 55/60 mph and I prefer backroads and old hiways...never. in a hurry
As for loud and woundup...ugh...whatever,it drove better than my DD it basically I never "wound it up except to pull out"...so who knows....and it was ahell of a lot queiter than lots of things I have driven

Did you find your bus? I just bought one in Tennessee. It was a 97 also.

I just read the thread you started, congrates.
Check out my thread "El Tortuga" I still have 2 more vehicles to get rid of so I can start working on it,I got one loaded this weekend and hopefully will drop it off on Friday and get other one loaded Friday.
Read my ins/tag thread might be easier to tag it in Tn as an rv and transfer title once in Cali

Re: "We are 100% of the way there"BASE BUS PRICE has been me

Another one ready to leave, cut off hitch and skid plate and then gas tank...dang rust

Didnt run and had lots of issues so I had to get it onto a borrowed trailer with no winch and no way to tow it onto it.

Notice snatch block attached to trailer A-frame and old 3/8 cable from blazer to......

Lisa stepped up and used her truck in the front yard to pull it onto the trailer,I love her :

******Disclaimer,I had 2 "dampeners" on the cable and it wasn't fray'd********

It "looked" nice all right, the paint was 15yrs old! Not sure what it was painted with but it sealed the metal so good it rusted out from the inside!,so bad the floors and walls where gone!!seat belts where hanging nothing to bolt to,no floors at all...very weird,if you push hard the paint popped it and a hole would appear
