Yosemite in a Skoolie?

Anyone been to Yosemite in a full-sized bus? If so, which roads are wise to take, which ones are wise to avoid, and what other advice might you have for me?

We're in the planning phase of a move across the country. The plan is to get a full-sized conventional bus with air brakes, gut it, and put all we own inside. We will leave the last seven feet at the back for some bunks, a sawdust bucket, a jug of water, and a camp stove.

45-foot tour buses get to Yosemite all the time, but some of the roads up from the San Joaquin Valley are quite narrow in places. The road over Tioga Pass and down to US395 is stunningly beautiful, but the descent after the ranger station could be very hard on your bus's brakes unless you have a Telma or Jakes. Parking in Yosemite Valley may be something you want to research before getting there.

What John says is true.Google Recreation.gov----go to Yosemite. Find campgrounds in Yosemite Valley and look around. We make reservations 6 mo in advance and go there in May and October each year in our short skoolie but only via hwy 40 out of Fresno. 40 has a few grades over 5% but none are very long. The drive from Tioga to the valley should be saved for summer months (it is usually closed from late Nov to early June) and would be more than a little dicey in a fully loaded skoolie. Hope this helps, Jack
