Alaska trip with shortbus

Hello everybody, I am a long time reader, but first time poster. Just curious if any of you have driven to Deadhorse, Alaska from Midwest states? Do you have any suggestions/recommendations?

We have a couple of Alaska residents here.:thumb:

Bundle up, it's cold up there. That's clear up to Prudhoe Bay, yup it's cold.
What time of year do you plan on going?

My first thought...wait till summer.

We drove our bus to Deadhorse from northern Minnesota.
Go!
It's a great trip!
Go!
If you have the time loop through the Northwest Territories.
Go!
The Top of the World highway is fantastic!
Go!
Skagway is worth seeing.
Go!
We did a little over 10,000 miles in six weeks. Left home July 3rd.
Just Go!
Post pictures. Have fun!

Yup! head out in late June and head back in late August----I waited until early September and the first big rain followed by the first snow on the Alcan Hwy. I can still see the Greyhound bus sliding down the hill in my direction, wheels not turning.. I also remember looking up at the passengers as they looked down on me while they slid by. That was 50 years ago---doubt much has changed!

The travel guide called The Milepost is worth having especially if you have not driven to Alaska before.
The Alaska highway is pretty tame, lots of older folks in big RVs.
Lots of good informal campsites if you look carefully.
The Dalton highway is great. Checkout Wiseman.

Hi all!
I am just getting ready for a 3-week road trip in Alaska at the beginning of May with my gf. I'm considering renting a car for two weeks. Best value I've found on one of these car rental sites
I don't want to spend too much time on the road. Activities will be mostly outdoors (day hikes etc) and I'd like to go on a day cruise

Do you have any recommendations for me?

first time I went up the Alcan was winter in 82, and was a real adventure - the next time was in the winter of 2001 and was a piece of cake in comparison - all paved and well maintained

You won't regret it!.. and may not come back...

One trip to Alaska is all it takes... that is how most people end up living here.

The highway is not the jeep track it used to be.. I drove my (pre-conversion) shorty up here from California.. 1971 LoadStar... FUN trip... no problems in August..

I have also driven from Kansas up pulling a trailer and five dogs in the truck... I would do it again.

Second on the advice for: Get a "milepost"... and try the first trip in summer.
Don't miss the HOT SPRINGS along the way...
My next trip down the highway (post conversion) is planned for fall time...

You won't regret it... and might just like it enough to stay!!

Alaska sure is beautiful county, at least from what I remember from my childhood. I would recommend a summer trip to ANYONE!
