International DT466 Engine

Hello: I am on the verge of purchasing a 2007 Rear Engine bus with a DT466 engine and an AT3000 transmission. I am hearing that some have had problems with the DT466 engine - any insight you can offer about the engine will be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Welcome Begunahi,

If that bus were 4 years older I would get excited about it. By 2007 you are likely looking at EGR and DPF to add potential problems.

The medium duty diesels after 2003-2004 are equipped with emissions equipment that reduces reliability and increases maintenance costs.

There are some outfits that sell delete kits to remove the emissions equipment for off-road use. There may be some folks running them on the highway in the US. Be aware that doing so violates Federal law.

Out of all the emissions engines from 2004 to 2009 I encounter, the DT466 seems to have the least emissions related issues. They are still a very solid, dependable engine. I service about 4 of these regularly and they are all pushing 300K with no major issues.

EGR was introduced in 2004... I dont believe DPF was introduced till into the Maxxforce DT years...

the DT466 when it changed ot Maxxforce DT for all new computers and went from a HEUI system to common rail system..

the 07 DT466 will have EGR, and that should be looked after but it was still bot the full-on emission Maxxforce DT..

Thank YOU very much for your thoughts. I will continue to look further into this before making my final decision. Again, I appreciate your time.

Its good to hear of your experience with the DT466. I am learning there is no such thing as a perfect engine. I am not a diesel mechanic, so I am being cautious before I make my investment. Thanks again for your input.

My 07 IC was manufactured in 05 and has no DPF.

LOTS of problems with an 07 engine. Stay pre-04 for the best diesel engines.
