Muffler decision .... what to do ??? opinions needed.

Hello all,

Relatively new the the group and need some advice on replacement of
the muffler on my bus. Presently I have a Ford 370 2 bbl with a 429
4 bbl on the way(arrival should be this Tuesday.) While Im dropping
in the new engine I may as well take care of the old muffler. The
muffler is the classic bus huge pop can/barrel type and while it is
pretty much fine it has been patched once and shows signs of getting
ready to go again soon.

My question is that since the bus runs on regular gas why would I
need to spend the money on a new barrel type muffler ? Couldnt I
just install a regular car/truck muffler without any prohlems?

Thanks in advance for any and all input.

Any muffler large enough to handle a 429 should work. I'd do dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers. Maybe give you an increase in power and it would sound cool too! Of course if you want it quiet as possible then you may want to stick with a standard muffler. If your exhuast exits out the rear of the bus I'd shorten it to exit out the side in front of the rear wheels. That would reduce restriction even more (=more power).

if you need new exhaust.....why not chrome stacks ??

I really like the flowmaster idea..........but the noise level might be a bit more than desired.

Remember what my bus sounded like the night we took it to Perkins, you thought that was awesome  (my bus sounded like it had big block)

I remember that. Your exhaust began to separate from the manifold or something. That engine sounded sweet!
