The converter in the MT643 only locks in 3rd and 4th gears. So, if you're climbing steep hills, it's probably still a good idea to add a transmission cooler.

I have one on my bus, because we are...

I think you're a bit ahead of me in this swap, but from what I've found, you're likely going to need to swap/remove/add an adapter between engine and trans as the two trans have different bolt...

I briefly looked into a 2 speed rear end, but from what I recall, the cost was no less than a transmission swap.

Frank-id: see my above post. Normally, you would be correct, but the AT542/545...

I have an AT542 also, and I would definitely swap the transmission rather than rear gears.
The AT doesn't have a lockup torque converter, so even though the MT has the same 1:1 top gear, locking the...

Got just a little more speed....

I put off the trans swap that I was looking into earlier. However, I noticed that besides the rear axle being sprung for 5,000 lbs over GVWR, the rear of the bus sat noticeably higher than the...

Re: want just a bit more speed

Thanks for the replies. I did some initial research, and yeah, the ZF6 seems like an initial candidate.

As far as torque/power ratings, I haven't done all of my research yet, but the T444 is...

Re: want just a bit more speed

I have an AT542 behind a T444, and drive through the mountains. That trans sucks for my application, and my experience agrees with all of the informative posts in here about it not letting the...

Re: Question about School Bus Suspension

My plan on my bus is to remove a couple leaves in the rear suspension to soften up the ride as a nearly free method to actually make the ride semi acceptable. Long term will be air bags, probably.

Re: Allison AT545 Torque Converter Swap

Ha ha, fair enough. A 5 speed manual would be sweet.

Getting a donor bus to swap parts from could be a slick idea.

Re: Allison AT545 Torque Converter Swap

Wouldn't it be easier to swap a different automatic, as it wouldn't require installing a clutch pedal and shifter?

I'm all for manuals (my daily driver has one), but that seems more difficult than...

Re: Allison AT545 Torque Converter Swap

For performance, a different transmission would be ideal, but I don't think its practical. On that note, though, has anybody swapped out an AT545? Is there something readily available for a...

Allison AT545 Torque Converter Swap

I have a 95 International 3600 with T444E and an Allison AT545, which doesn't have a lockup torque converter. Heat production going up hills in the mountains is really high, and its sucking fuel...

Re: Engine communications?

The Scan guage looks pretty ideal, I think I'll go that route.

Re: Engine communications?

I'd like to be able to get real time engine info, if it can be reasonably done. I know its simple and cheap to do in a passenger car, but I don't know about an old medium duty truck. My initial...

Engine communications?

I recently bought a 1995 International chassis/Thomas Vista bus with a T444E (I'm pretty sure).

With passenger cars, you can get a ton of info using a simple OBD2 port reader such as mpg,...
