Re: want just a bit more speed

That auto is slaying your fuel economy. With a small bus like yours, you would get 14mpg with a manual or a lock-up. I get 12.5 with a 20,000# full load--and we have stuff on the roof as well.

Re: Repleace Rear Axle Seal, Bluebird

It's big, but very simple. The truck repair guys have to make a living too, so I don't find fault in taking something like that to them.

Re: want just a bit more speed

Just looked up the IH 3600--really cool bus.

It's also great that you are using scangauge--I have that in my Powerstroke van.

I don't know what fixes are available for Ford trannies. On a Chevy...

Re: 345 in S1723: Rebuild or Swap?

I wouldn't rebuild that gas motor, and I wouldn't try to keep the tranny. No medium duty gas engines are very powerful. They have very low compression because they have to be run at high loading and...

Re: Question about School Bus Suspension

The air pressure is pretty easy to figure out with the Kelderman kit. The idea is to keep the part that the bags sit on, level. It takes about 40psi at our weight. The big thing is the isolation the...

Re: Upgrade from DT360 and AT545?

Just for my curiosity, what it like when you hit the mountains? Whats your average speed up a long grade? Whats your MPG roughly? This actually sounds like a good setup to me. Not that I'd drive...

Re: Upgrade from DT360 and AT545?

I mean, what power does the DT466 offer? A few more--like I think there is a 210hp version, but most are less. Most of your power is being eaten by a rubbish transmission. That Allison thing is...

Re: want just a bit more speed

From what I can find the ZF6 weighs 235# and the F5406 Fuller in my bus weighs 360# and they are both rated at close to the same torque. The difference, I'm sure, is duty cycle. A Powerstroke light...

Re: brakes and other stuff

Napa can get pretty much anything. It can take some work though. Trucks are put together in many different configurations. It's best to bring the part in as they often have to measure stuff and use...

Re: want just a bit more speed

It's like when I bought an angle grinder from Harbor Freight 20 years ago. I took it back about 7 times. They guy told me, when you get a good one, it will be good.

It wasn't, but the 6.2 was...

Re: want just a bit more speed

Well, in my opinion the TH400 is the best auto tranny ever built. Despite my long use of the DTA360 and Fuller 6-speed, my real workhorse has always been my crewcab Chevy with a 6.2 diesel, Banks...

Re: want just a bit more speed

That's good insight.

Back in the old days of hot rodding you often installed a "shift kit" in your trans. Little spring changes in the valve body would increase the pressure on the clutch and...

Re: want just a bit more speed

That doesn't mean it's not scooting out from underneath the torque load. I'll bet it is. This is the same reason every manual transmission version of a pickup truck has a lower tow rating than the...

Re: want just a bit more speed

I don't know how old the Guard bus was. I didn't see the front, but it seemed new.

My wife tried to drive during the trip. I had been bothering her for years to let me coach her, but she...

Re: want just a bit more speed

Just finished a 4,200 mile trip from Indiana to Pike's Peak, Durango, Mesa Verde, and Grand Canyon. My bus is 185hp and has 3.73s replacing the 4.88s, and a 6-speed manual tranny. We did the long,...

Re: Let's do this!

I have a DTA360 and Fuller manual. It's absolutely reliable. Allison autos from old buses are horrible from the MPG point of view. I have had this bus 8 years and get about 11-12mpg. Those old autos...

Re: Question about School Bus Suspension

My bus came with leaf springs. I bought Kellerman air-ride kit for it. It now rides on a magic carpet.

A bus is a truck chassis. For all it knows, you are an empty dump truck on your way to load...

Re: GMAC wouldn't insure

State Farm, who I have everything else with, had no problem with my bus, but wanted a bunch of pictures taken so they could see that the seats were out and that it wasn't still a bus. I called GMAC...

Re: 1991 Thomas conversion

Yeah, that is the worst downpipe in world. I've been looking at the military trucks that I drove way back when, and the exhaust came out just off to the right of the cab. Look at the deuce and a...

Re: 1991 Thomas conversion

No quote yet. I'm guessing I will spend $3,000 on power, but won't flinch until it hits $5,000. Just guessing $1,000 on the pump and $2,000 on the turbo. Why do you need to modify the doghouse? It's...

Re: 1991 Thomas conversion

Been a while since I've updated this thread. Lots of miles. We've got 3.73 gears now and can go fast, but need more horsepower now. That's coming. But we're also tired of the rear suspension beating...

Re: want just a bit more speed

That 3.54 isn't a usual number for a school bus. A bus with a chip to flash isn't usual either. Most of you, like me, have to find a truck salvage yard with your desired pumpkin and swap them for it....

Re: Engine and Transmission Questions - looking at two busse

A school bus is slow. It doesn't need a lock-up converter because it is rarely in a situation where it could benefit from one. An automatic uses the converter to split the gears, especially in a...

Re: Had the diff swap done...

I swapped my rear diff as well. I went from a 4.78 (69mph at fuel-stop 2,900rpm) to a 3.73 (88mph at fuel-stop). I haven't driven it 88mph, which there is no way it has the power to do, but it makes...
