Re: Overall Weight of Skoolie

All vehicles are required to come with a statement from the manufacturer which shows the maximum Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) as well as the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) per axle. On a...

Re: What amp draw ok on common?

Sorry to hear you haven't resolved it yet. However, it does seem like you've isolated it to the engine side, and not the electrical side.

Hopefully the shop will figure it out soon. The...

Re: Looking for a bus in Oregon

Two sites I used were:
https://www.publicsurplus.com/sms/browse/cataucs?catid=402
https://www.govdeals.com/index.cfm?fa=main.catsearch&rd&sortoption=ea&StartRow=1&mycat=94H

I also watched eBay and...

Re: Removing rub rails?? are they needed??

Rub rails provide extra protection in the event of scraping and side collisions. It does increase the structural integrity by quite a bit. On the other hand, a school bus is incredibly over...

Re: high efficiency a/c units

Thank Chuck for the real-world feedback.

Unfortunately, I can research and research and research, and learn a lot, but it's all theory for me at this point. I haven't *actually* put my ideas into...

Some thoughts on converting a bus to an RV

Over the years, I've formed some strong opinions about using RV component when converting a bus into a home on wheels.

I'm going to try to list these opinions here in hopes that new people looking...

Re: Information on GFI

I'm personally of the opinion that everything *should* be GFI protected if there is any chance that a human might come into contact with any potentially conductive surface on that item. How's that...

Information on GFI

Found this link on another forum. Someone took the time to document how GFIs work, and make it available to the public in a fairly easy to understand form. It then goes on to mention the common...

high efficiency a/c units

So I was doing a lot of research today, as I really don't want to give up air conditioning in my travels. In my research, I rediscovered the ductless mini-split air conditioning systems. Now, I've...

Re: What amp draw ok on common?

Redbear, thanks for jumping in here. Great information!

GameRV,

That is a good test. The numbers added up just don't support the genset hitting its limit, unless there is a load that...

Re: What amp draw ok on common?

That lines up with the information I found on the website for norpro.
https://www.4norpro.com/pdfs/POWER%20MAX%20I/21PMI.pdf

I'm confused why it says 1 phase 120/240 and also lists 4 wires (which...

Re: What amp draw ok on common?

Well, 3 phase power does complicate things a bit.

My first recommendation is to find a good commercial electrician that is comfortable with 3 phase power systems. Preferably one that sells...

Re: What amp draw ok on common?

Ok... 35A +10A + 42A is only 87A total, which is well within your generator's rating. For an A/C though, it's a good idea to use twice the rating for a guesstimate for the surge when the compressor...

Re: What amp draw ok on common?

That's a nice genset.

Yes, it sounds like you're set up for 240V split phase.

I'm not sure what the amp load of all your loads totaled is, so I don't know if rewiring would help. ...

Re: What amp draw ok on common?

You'll want to read this: https://www.skoolie.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10096#p72743. I think it will make things clearer on how a split phase 240/120V system works.

Hope this helps,
jim

Re: GFCI vs Progressive Industries

There are basically 2 ways of doing GFCI protection. One is a GFCI equipped circuit breaker (more expensive), and the other is via a GFCI outlet.

With the circuit breaker, your whole circuit is...

Re: GFCI vs Progressive Industries

Open ground and open neutral are both potentially dangerous, but detecting those does not protect you from a GFCI type incident.

In normal 110V operation, power flows between the Line and Neutral...

Re: Solar Gurus?

Thanks, that does help.

Just one thing that I just caught... if the batteries are 200AH 6V, then wiring two in series gives you 200AH 12V, and then doing the same again for the other two gives you...

Re: Fran (Sinclair) skoolie

That would appear to be an air duct to duct warm air from the driver's heater back into the passenger area. In some busses, that would also contain coolant lines that go back to rear heaters. In...

Re: power steering pump

Have you tried removing it and taking it some place like NAPA? Often times there are equivalent parts that can be sourced and having the part in hand makes it easier to identify. Also, a parts...

Are you taking your skoolie on the ferry? If so, do you mind sharing about how much that will end up costing? We're considering doing something similar in the future.

Personally, I would call Morningstar as it is their MPPT controller you're planning to use, and pose your question to them. Their controller is what will need to handle all the power from the cells,...
