As a general rule rebuilding a starter yourself will cost 75% of the cost of buying a reman and will have 0% of the warranty. Unless it's something simple like just needing new brushes I sure wouldn't be tempted to pull it down.

If you think that starter is hard try doing on in a 4.6 powered Crown Victoria. Factory threadlocker is the devil.
