Roof Rack

Hi all- Wanted to share new roof rack on the Freebyrd. It is 8' x 9' and can be accessed via the emergency exit on the roof. It is made of 1 x 2 stock (legs and main part of the frame), as well as 1 x 1 for the top rail. Expanded metal and flat stock are also used for the base portion of the rack and the actual feet, respectively. I used 4 in bolts to go through the roof. They were a tad bit long, but I am able to use the extra threading inside.

My father, Forest Road Welding in Greenfield, NH was the welder and brains behind the operation. If you are in the area and interested in learning more about how to get one of these for your skoolie email me or respond to this posting. We nailed it as it is almost perfectly square (despite the large footprint area, it is only 1/16th of an inch off....amazing!).

Be well,

The BYRD

Re: Roof Rack

Handy having a welder in the family... and one that will do the welding.

Freebyrd... It was really good to meet you and check out your bus at wormtown a few weeks ago.. The rack looks even better in person. I just started a forum for my skoolie if you want to check it out..

Re: Roof Rack

That's a beautiful rack, I'm wanting to put one on my bus when I get to that point. Nice job!

NICE RACK! haddasayit... I'd be interested to see a few closer pics inside and out where it mounts to the bus. Brainstorming ideas for a nice low profile detachable rack for myself. Ideally it will be very strong and capable of supporting whatever I can throw up there, yet removable and leave little or no sign it was there when its off. I'd like to be able to take my rig from all out safari mobile back to non-descript senior citizen mobile by unbolting a few things and changing the wheels.

Looks awesome! Any idea on how much something like this would cost to have built?

How did you connect the rack to the roof? Did you bolt through ribs? More please!
