1960 GMC PD4104

Well I bought a second bus, but it is not a skoolie this time. This is a 1960 GMC PD4104 with a 671 Detroit Diesel, jake brake, 140 gallon fuel tank, propane Onan GenSet, Fresh/Black/Grey water tanks, electric water heater, two roof air conditioners, DuoTherm furnace, Wedgwood stove, Norcold refrigerator, vent fans, inside and outside showers, full bathroom.

More pictures and info to come later. I have a lot of work to do transferring some things from my other bus and upgrading/fixing some of the things are already here.

I drove the bus for six hours on Saturday and I love having the huge fuel tank, big AC units, having the engine all the way in the back really surprised me how much nicer that is.

Re: 1960 GMC PD4104

I have both of the buses in my driveway now. I am sure the HOA is loving that.

I am moving the satellite tracker over to the coach and I will go back to my trusty point and shoot dish on the skoolie.

Last night I fixed up the wiring on the skoolie and put in a new digital TV converter box and removed the brackets for the tracker.

Steve, Great bus! After you switch everything over, you should make Smitty a deal

I got the King-Dome Trac-King LP satellite dish mounted and a test cable hooked up while I wait for a new cable entry cover for this bus.

Re: 1960 GMC PD4104

Here is the power system I am working towards. To change between shore power or the generators you will have to change a locking 50 amp cable, but the rest of the system will be hard wired. Looks like I am going to end up with four separate banks of batteries but I have plenty of room for that now. The reason for having two generators on the diagram is that I will have my Honda with me when I don't need a lot of power and I don't want to be making a lot of noise. The Hondas are amazingly quiet.

Re: 1960 GMC PD4104

I got my batteries for the inverter mounted and I changed over the circuits that I will want to be able to run off the inverter into a new breaker panel. This is the first time I have used these tandem circuit breakers, they are great when you have related circuits but might be a pain if you have something you want to turn on and off often.

Re: 1960 GMC PD4104

I finished up the wiring for the sat. dish and mounted the tv on a swivel arm above the drivers seat to allow it to move for different uses and I can hide all the electronics in a door behind it.

Re: 1960 GMC PD4104

I got the Inverter/Transfer Switch in that I am going to use. I have it mounted and connected to the batteries but I still need to run the AC wires in and out of it.

I finally drew up the floor plan of the bus:

Re: 1960 GMC PD4104

I like those pd4104's, they were quite an improvement over the 4103's mainly because of the flat floor and the air ride rear axle.

I also own a 4103 that I bought 8 years ago. It was vandalized by some kids where I had it parked when I lived in the city. Darn kids broke out the curved door glass and cracked the right windshield. I can't find a door glass at all and the windshield will cost about a grand or more by the time it's delivered. Great running bus, tho I sorta got afraid to take it too far from home because of the problem of finding parts in case of a breakdown. It was built in 1952 and served most of its working life working the towns around the bay area. Surprisingly, everything in it still works and is simple to repair.

It too was fully converted. I now use it as a guest house. The main reason I bought my '92 Ward is for the flat glass and floor, power steering, air ride rear axle, auto transmission ( so the wife can drive it ), and easy to get parts for. Horsepower is about the same, but I think the 6-71 has a bit more torque. The ex-Greyhounds ride a bit smoother but that may be because of the extra weight.

Keep us posted on your progress, that is one sweet looking ride.
