Getting the Bus Home

PA SKOOLIE OWNERS!! We’re bringing our first bus home tomorrow! Just wanted to post and make sure we have all of our ducks in a row for driving this thing home. Any advice / experience will be helpful!

It’s a 6 window bus, so it’s only ~25ft long - like a standard RV. I will have liability insurance from Progressive commercial. I believe that we won’t have plates because we’re buying from a bus company, and as an individual I don’t think we can have school bus plates. I think this means I’ll be driving home (approx 150 miles / 3hrs) without plates. I will, however, have a bill of sale from the notary when we transfer the title. We’re avoiding toll roads to avoid the toll-by-plate. Anything else we should be doing to prep for the ride home?

I would see if your state will issue a temporary travel permit for getting it home.

I’m in PA and just bought a bus last week from out of state. You can go get an in-transit tag or temp tag from a title place ahead of time if I remember correctly. In our case, we got one from the state we bought the bus in.

Seems like there is a perfect legal option for buses being transported out of state. That is...buses bought in PA to be taken out of state or buses bought out of state to be brought into PA. Busses bought in PA and staying in PA are left with a weird chicken/egg problem, seems most people just drive it home with a bill of sale. That’s us!
