Take the number of windows and multiply by 27", then add 6' for an RE or FE and 10' for a CE (aka dognose) and that will give you a rough idea of the length of the bus. There's not really a standard size for buses.

Ok thank you I’m just trying to come up with the longest possible usable space for a food truck and utilizing a school bus

What would a safe number be for a 82 passenger front engine be

Anything over 28 feet would be like a god send lol

I think the biggest buses are all 40' so that's probably what you're looking at with an 82. Anything other than a shorty is going to be well over 28'. Just to test my formula: 82 passengers is 14 seats, 14 x 27" = 31.5', +6' = 37.5' so it's a little short of the 40' I'm almost positive it really is.

FWIW I have occasionally run across school buses for sale already converted to food trucks so maybe keep an eye out for something like that.

In your conversion is what’s the area for the 14 rows of seats that’s what I’m mainly after because I’m going to make that the kitchen prep and cooking area

Headroom is going to be your other big concern. A lot of buses are around 6'2" or so down the center and you lose about 5 or 6 inches from this at the edges. You probably wouldn't insulate a food truck but you might need those thick mats which will cost another inch or so.

Yeah but with the equipment needing about 30” from wall to center isle I think it will be manageable

I believe what Musigenesis was indicating by the formula is that the windows are about 27 inches from post to post. So working backwards, 28 feet * 12 in/ft / 27 in = 12.44 windows. So, an 11 or 12 window bus would suit your needs.


I own an 11 window conventional bus that is 38 feet long with 29 feet from the edge of the stair well (also known as the back of the driver seat) to the back of the bus.

Most buses are over 28 feet man. 40 footers are common. Look for like 13-15 rows of windows.
