One way to add solar panal rails

Made some pretty heavy duty solar rail mounts for my bus lately. Used Ironridge xr100 rails and made some extra strong L brackets.

Snapped a chalk line inside and drilled 1/4" holes on both sides of each hat channel, used grade 8 hardware, sealed with 3M-5200. The L brackets are 3/16 aluminum made from sheet. Going to cover the hardware with some UV resistant polyurethane. Inside I did a small weld at each bolt head.

Sounds like a solid setup! Using Ironridge XR100 rails with custom aluminum L brackets and grade 8 hardware ensures durability and stability. Sealing with 3M-5200 and adding UV-resistant polyurethane is a great way to prevent leaks and weathering. The small welds inside for extra hold at the bolt heads are a nice touch for added security. Great work for a long-lasting solar mount!

Nice work!

I have something very similar in my future... The IronRidge products are nice - my house will use the same XR100 rails system being installed (professionally) this spring.

That should work nicely. Jonathan Roberts sells some brackets much like that which I used, screwed into the hat channels, and sealed with 5200 (and realistically the 5200 alone is probably strong enough to hold them). The XR100 rails are well done and easy to work with. I used their UFO clamps with the camo clamps as additional security at the ends.

i used similar angle brackets from jonathon roberts too. but i used the heavier duty aluminum rails, the xr1000 from ironridge. i think they had three grades, the xr10, xr100 and xr1000, depending on the the thickness of aluminum.

im just screwed to the roof, no grade 8, no magic fasteners. 2 screws per foot, most of the screws go thru 3 layers of metal (2 skin overlaps and a hat channel) so they get a good bite.

i will see how it lasts.
