Wheel well covers

Our wheel wells have a plastic cover over the metal wheel wells. We are planning on building two couches over the front wheel wells, will have a bunk bed over the right back wheel well, and a composting toilet over the left back wheel well. We plan to box all four wheel wells in with plywood, before building anything over them. Do we need to put the plastic covers back on them, before boxing them in? Do the plastic covers serve any purpose?

I am thinking they are to protect the wheel wells from wear and tear from any shoes and boots. I would not imagine in the skoolie environment that protection is needed. You may want to consider insulation though.
