A Cummins or d466????
Hi guys,
I need your help choosing the best option. Because there are so many combos and this is a purchase that I will like to do only once, at least for many years to come< I want it to be a educated one.
I already know that a TD466 is a more powerful engine than the 5.9, but the only options in my price range are conventional buses. I really like the flat nose, especially for the floor space.
Option 1: an International d466 conventional
Option 2: and blue bird cummins 5.9
both have about the same mileage and condition.
What do you recommend the body that I like with the less powerful engine or the conventional with the more powerful engine?

I figured a flat nose would have a little less usable space considering the hump in the cab.
I also figured that a flat nose would be a little more noisy while operating for the same reason.
Both of those I actually don't know if they are valid.
I can say that I was drawn to the DT466e based on the fact that the engine can be rebuilt while in the frame. For me would be a must in a post apocalyptic landscape.
I ended up finding a good deal (in my mind) on a DT466e and I think I got very lucky.

DT466 is bigger AND better. Can be overhauled without pulling it from the bus. Just my opinion.

Flatnose has MORE interior space vs exterior length, easier to maneuver, harder to work on motor.
I suggest you drive them both. bring a tape measure. be picky.

I believe a 5.9 in a full size bus, while merely adequate for short distance, moderate speed school bus service, is going to be woefully underpowered on the highway. I'd get the DT466, all other factors being similar.

i have a cummins 5.9, and its ok, but there is no replacement for displacement.
a better match up would be the cummins 8.3 and a dt466. it'd be a coin toss for me between these two. about the same displacement, hp, and both inframe rebuild able. these will run in the 230hp range while the smaller cummins will be 180 or 190.

Thank you guys. I decided to pass on the 5.9 and since the 466 would not be available until the 23 of this month, I will keep looking around.

You can buy buy six injectors for the mechanical DT466 for about the same price as one injector for the electronic DT466E

OK than time to educate and inform , does anyone own and operate a 8.3 or a 10 liter cummings motor , do you like them ? do they pull hills with a load ? How about fuel mileage ?

Busmanmoa, you just read my mind. I was about to ask the members to give me feedback, base on their own experiences on the road.

8.3 Cummins and DT466 are the two GOOD engines to look for in school buses. Other than those rich guy buses out west with 855's or Detroit 2 strokes.
